Hibernated Code for the NOAA Climate Data Record for the ISSCP Radiation Budget

ISCCP-FH; ISCCP Radiation Budget

This is a "hibernated" code package for creating the ISCCP Radiation Budget Climate Data Record--the newest version of the ISCCP-FD product. The code package follows a very specific set of guidelines set out in the "SciTech Software Rejuvenation 'Hibernation' Process (CDRP-PRCS-0726 Rev 1)" document (contact NOAA CDR Program for more information about this document). The code package contains documentation, test data, and the code required to implement the software in a production environment. The purpose of the code is to create a dataset that improves upon previously released products that calculate global radiative fluxes that describe cloud properties, the atmosphere, and the surface. Parameters include: all broadband, upward and downward, shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) fluxes for all-, clear- and overcast-sky. The new dataset will be based on the newest version of ISCCP data products (under-development), incorporating these and other newer, improved datasets, modernized code, and a new flux profile data product for the whole period 1983-2010. The code is written using Bash, IDL and Fortran scripts.

Purpose The data will be used to provide a climate-quality cloud product with better spatial resolution, better homogeneity and better accuracy than previously released versions. As not all inputs for this particular dataset are ready for production, "hibernating" the code will ensure that the code will be accessible and documented for long-term storage, and that when software engineers are ready to begin using the code, minimal effort will be required to put the code into production.
Use Limitations
  • Data inputs are not available for the code. While the code package is designed to enable faster implementation when all inputs are available, some testing and quality review should be undertaken to ensure that code results are delivered as expected.

Lineage information for: software
Lineage Statement This is a software code package that was created following the process specified in the "SciTech Software Rejuvenation 'Hibernation' Process" document. The code cannot be implemented in production until data inputs are available (currently still under development). Data produced from this code should be thoroughly tested and quality-checked to ensure correct results.
Processing Steps

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
