abstract:  This dataset consists of monthly net primary productivity (NPP) estimates for 1998-2009 derived from the Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM) for the 26 Outer Continental Shelf planning areas in the United States, produced by CSA International, Inc. (CSA) under contract to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. The NPP data are provided as GeoTIFF files depicting global gridded monthly NPP estimates. Summary NPP statistics for each of the 26 planning areas are also provided as separate ASCII text files. Input datasets used in the VGPM were also provided by CSA and present in this accession. These input datasets include global monthly sea surface temperature from the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 data set, global photosynthetically available radiation (par) and chlorophyll-a concentration data from the SeaWiFS and MODIS instruments, and global climatological monthly mean photoperiod data. These input datasets are provided in HDF4, with the exception of the photoperiod data which is provided in binary format.
purpose:  1) To provide the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Resources and Evaluation with current and complete estimates of marine productivity for the 26 Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) planning areas; 2) To evaluate current methods of estimating marine productivity; 3) To select preferred methods for determining primary and secondary productivity estimates; and 4) To develop updated estimates for all OCS Planning Areas.

description:  Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer-2 The AVHRR-2 is a multi purpose imaging instrument used for global measurement of cloud cover, sea surface temperature, ice, snow and vegetation cover and characteristics. This instrument was initially carried on NOAA-7 (launched June 1981) and was last flown on NOAA-14 which was decommissioned in 2005. This 5-channel radiometer covering 2 visible and 3 thermal infrared between 0.63 and 12.0 micrometers, has an instantaneous footprint of 1.1 km at the sub satellite point.             description:  Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer-3 The AVHRR-3 is a six channel scanning radiometer providing 3 solar channels in the visible-near infrared region and 3 thermal infrared channels. The AVHRR-3 has two one-micrometer wide channels between 10.3 and 12.5 micrometers. This latest version of AVHRR was first carried on NOAA-15 launched in May 1998 and subsequently in all current NOAA and MetOp platforms. Measuring the same view, this array of diverse wavelengths, after processing, permits multi spectral analysis for more precisely defining hydrologic, oceanographic, and meteorological parameters. Comparison of data from two channels is often used to observe features or measure various environmental parameters. The three channels operating entirely within the infrared band are used to detect the heat radiation from and hence, the temperature of land, water, sea surfaces, and the clouds above them. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS are viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). MODIS Technical Specifications Orbit: 705 km, 10:30 a.m. descending node (Terra) or 1:30 p.m. ascending node (Aqua), sun-synchronous, near-polar, circular Scan Rate: 20.3 rpm, cross track Swath Dimensions: 2330 km (cross track) by 10 km (along track at nadir) Telescope: 17.78 cm diam. off-axis, afocal (collimated), with intermediate field stop Size: 1.0 x 1.6 x 1.0 m Weight: 228.7 kg Power: 162.5 W (single orbit average) Data Rate: 10.6 Mbps (peak daytime); 6.1 Mbps (orbital average) Quantization: 12 bits Spatial Resolution: 250 m (bands 1-2); 500 m (bands 3-7); 1000 m (bands 8-36) Design Life: 6 years (From: http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/about/index.html)

            type:  SeaWiFS
description:  Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor The purpose of the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project is to provide quantitative data on global ocean bio-optical properties to the Earth science community. Subtle changes in ocean color signify various types and quantities of marine phytoplankton (microscopic marine plants), the knowledge of which has both scientific and practical applications. The SeaWiFS Project will develop and operate a research data system that will process, calibrate, validate, archive and distribute data received from an Earth-orbiting ocean color sensor. The SeaStar spacecraft, developed by OSC, carries the SeaWiFS instrument and was launched to low Earth orbit on board an extended Pegasus launch vehicle on August 1, 1997. The SeaWiFS instrument will be the only scientific payload on the SeaStar spacecraft. OSC has the sole responsibility for the development, launch, and command and control of the satellite. The development of the SeaWiFS instrument was subcontracted to Hughes/SBRC, but OSC maintains ultimate responsibility for the instrument. The SeaWiFS instrument consists of an optical scanner and an electronics module. (From: http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/SeaWiFS/BACKGROUND/SEAWIFS_BACKGROUND.html)

Name OrbView-2 Country(s) US: UNITED STATES Platform Class 65: Orbiting satellite Commissioned Date 1997 Decommissioned Date 2010 Notes - OIC USA Ocean Imaging satellite. Formerly known as SeaStar. Previous Name SeaStar Information Source (URL) - http://www.wmo-sat.info/oscar/satellites/view/395 Confirmed by NOAA on 2018-08-08. OTHER INFORMATION: https://www.wmo-sat.info/oscar/satellites/view/395 Launched in 1997, OrbView-2 (originally named SeaStar) was the first commercial satellite to provide daily color images of the Earth. Under a unique arrangement with NASA, Orbital designed and built the OrbView-2 satellite, integrating its SeaWiFS sensor. Upon its successful launch, operations of the satellite were handed over to ORBIMAGE (now known as GeoEye) which manages the spacecraft and distributes its data for commercial use. Under a data buy arrangement, NASA procured OrbView-2 SeaWiFS data for scientific research from 1997 through 2004.
