        abstract:  ADCP data were collected by sensors from seven deployments within 2004-2007 on the HALE-ALOHA mooring, a location about 100 km north of Oahu, Hawaii, USA. The HALE-ALOHA mooring supports the Hawaii Ocean Time-series program. The ADCPs were one of many instruments deployed for the Multi-disciplinary Ocean Sensors for Environmental Analyses and Networks (MOSEAN) project, lead by the Ocean Physics Laboratory (OPL) of the University of California at Santa Barbara. The MOSEAN project is funded by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP). The main goal of MOSEAN is to develop and test relatively small, lightweight optical and chemical sensors for autonomous deployment. Each deployment lasted around six months. No data are available for deployment 1. Data quality is questionable for deployments 3-6 and thus are not archived at NODC. Only deployment 2 is of good quality and in the archive. The data were quality controlled by the OPL. MOSEAN SEACAT CTD data are provided in a separate NODC accession, 0115703.
        purpose:  The HALE-ALOHA mooring captures a broad dynamic range of oceanic variability (minutes to years), enabling new insights into high frequency and episodic phenomena while also providing long-term (climate-scale) and contextual, complementary information for other observations at the adjacent Hawaii Ocean Time-series site, for evaluation of undersampling/aliasing effects, and for developing and testing models. Some of the highlight results to date include studies of passages of Rossby waves, cold-core eddies and other mesoscale features have been used to estimate their roles in affecting new production, biogeochemical cycling, and carbon flux to the deep ocean.

            description:  Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
