browse graphicPreview graphic
This data set includes census based carbonate budget data that was collected in coral reef habitats located within the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). Surveys (based on Perry et al 2012) were collected over one week aboard the R/V Manta at the East Flower Garden Bank Mooring Buoy 3. Six transect surveys (10m each) were conducted to quantify benthic cover, macrobioerosion, and microbioerosion. Ten parrotfish surveys were also conducted to account for parrotfish erosion rates. This carbonate budget data along with other sea water chemistry data collected were used to establish a Class III monitoring site in the FGBNMS region.

  • Data Type: Rugosity (measured); Units: meter; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain laid out over benthos along ten meter transect line. Total chain length (m) is divided by linear length to calculate rugosity.
  • Data Type: Microbioerosion rate (measured); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain transects are used to quantify rugosity and available subrate (for microborers to colonize). These values and published erosion rates for endolithic microborers are calculated to estimate biological substrate erosion.
  • Data Type: Parrotfish Bioerosion (calculated); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Calculated using mean parrotfish abundance of all 10 transects.
