National Coral Reef Monitoring Program: Water Temperature Data from Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STRs) deployed at coral reef sites at Wake Island from 2011-03-22 to 2014-03-19 (NCEI Accession 0162218)
Water temperature data are collected using subsurface temperature recorders (STRs) that aid in the monitoring of seawater temperature variability at permanent coral reef sites in the Hawaiian and Mariana Archipelagos, American Samoa, and the Pacific Remote Island Areas as part of the NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP). High-accuracy temperature loggers made by SeaBird Electronics (SBE) are deployed on the reef for a period of 3 years at depths ranging from 0 to 30 meters along depth transects at Ocean and Climate Change monitoring survey sites. When a STR is recovered, typically another STR is deployed in the same location. Raw data with an original sample interval ranging from 1 to 20 minutes are averaged hourly, and gaps of longer than one hour in the time-series, due to instrument failure or battery death, are padded with null values. Temperate data are archived by region and year recovered. For analysis purposes, temperature sensor deployments are grouped by site, and temperature data from successive deployments at each site are concatenated.
The temperature data provided in this data set were collected from STRs deployed at existing, long-term monitoring sites during NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) led NCRMP missions.

Purpose | The NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long term approach to provide an ecosystem perspective via monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP is intended to coordinate various NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis. To support a long-term Coral Reef Conservation Program for sustainable management and conservation of coral reef ecosystems water temperature time series data—along with other data collected at the survey sites (archived separately under NCRMP)—are used to help scientists assess and understand how coral reefs monitored by the NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) are responding to thermal stress. |
