browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset contains profiles of water conductivity, temperature, pressure, and derived practical salinity in the Ross Ice Shelf cavity near the Whillans Ice Stream grounding zone. At this site, the water thickness in the cavity is 10.35 m. We also present mean and standard deviation of current speed at mid-depth, roughly 5 m below the ice-shelf base. The ice shelf at this site was 755 m thick. Data are in text format.

  • Parameter or Variable: CONDUCTIVITY (measured); Units: microsiemens/cm; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD - specific model; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sea-bird Electronics 19plus V2 sampling at a frequency of 4 Hz.
  • Parameter or Variable: TEMPERATURE - WATER [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: degrees Celsius; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD - specific model; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sea-bird Electronics 19plus V2 sampling at a frequency of 4 Hz.
  • Parameter or Variable: PRESSURE - WATER [HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE] (measured); Units: decibar; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD - specific model; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sea-bird Electronics 19plus V2 sampling at a frequency of 4 Hz.
  • Parameter or Variable: SALINITY (measured); Units: psu; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD - specific model; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sea-bird Electronics 19plus V2 sampling at a frequency of 4 Hz. Practical salinity is calculated from conductivity, temperature and pressure using the International Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater (International Oceanographic Commission, 2010) coded in Gibbs Seawater (GSW) Matlab toolbox..
  • Parameter or Variable: CURRENT METER - SPEED (calculated); Units: m/s; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: ADCP; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Current speed and direction were measured with Nortek Aquadopp 2 MHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. Acoustic backscatter levels were very weak due to low concentrations of suspended particulate matter. Measurements were made at 1 Hz then only the first range bin was low pass filtered at 2 mHz for an interval of 5-6 hours with the sensor stationed ~5 m below the ice shelf base near the middle of the water column.; Data Quality Method: Since current variability is not expected on very short timescales, the average standard deviation of velocity measurements over 10-minute intervals is taken to be an in situ estimate of instrumental noise, equal to 0.2 cm/s. We only analyzed data collected when the ADCP was rotating less than 2° s^-1 and the current orientation was changing less than 2° s^-1 during intervals of at least 30 s..
