CTD and plankton abundance data collected from R/V Bellows cruise BE-1407 in the Gulf of Mexico from 2013-12-07 to 2013-12-08 (NCEI Accession 0178026)
This dataset contains plankton abundance, CTD, and water quality data collected from 18 stations during R/V Bellows cruise BE-1407 in the Gulf of Mexico from 2013-12-07 to 2013-12-08. Plankton samples were collected from 10 offshore shelf sites. This dataset reports the location, date, time, and length of tow for each sample. Plankton species were categorized as Ceratium spp., Dinophysis spp., other dinoflagellates, Chaetoceros/Bacteriastrum spp., Rhizosolenia/Guinardia spp, Eucampia/Hemiaulus spp., other chain-forming diatoms, Thalassionematales spp., Nitzschioid diatoms, other diatoms, Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium spp.), and zooplankton. Abundances were recorded as individual counts as well as percentages of the total sample. Water column profiles were collected at 18 stations and the data includes CTD, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, Chlorophyll-a, and Color Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) fluorescence and turbidity measurements.

Supplemental Information | Data Parameters and Units: Depth (m), temperature (degrees C), salinity (PSU), conductivity (S/m), strain gauge pressure (db), dissolve oxygen concentration using a SBE-43 (mg/l), dissolve oxygen saturation using a SBE-43 (%), dissolve oxygen concentration using a Weiss (mg/l), CDOM fluorescence (mg/m^3), Chlorophyll-a fluorescence (mg/m^3), turbidity (NTU), latitude (decimal degrees), longitude (decimal degrees). Station, date and time (EDT), length of the tow, cell counts, and percentages. |
Purpose | The purpose of this cruise was to evaluate the biological diversity and trophic interactions among organisms ranging from primary producers to apex predators and from the deep-sea benthos to the coast. These data contribute to a food web model used to determine risks to ecosystem structure and function and regional economies following from extreme anthropogenic events (e.g., discharged and background hydrocarbon) and adaptive management strategies. |
