Dataset Overview | National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Water temperature, salinity, currents, and others collected by CTD and ADCP from MV Steller and MV Pelican in LeConte Bay, Alaska from 2016-08-09 to 2018-09-18 (NCEI Accession 0189574)

This dataset contains water temperature, salinity, currents, and other parameters taken during four field campaigns that occurred in LeConte Bay (near LeConte Glacier) in southeast Alaska in August 2016, May 2017, July 2017, September 2017, and September 2018. Supported by the National Science Foundation Polar Programs through projects LeConte Glacier and LeConte Bay Ice-Ocean Interactions.

During each cruise we collected water column temperature, salinity, and depth data using a CTD. In addition, we collected water velocity data from two pole-mounted ADCP systems situated off the side of the vessel, a 600 kHz to capture upper layer velocities in more detail and a 150 kHz ADCP to reach the bottom and characterize the entire water column flow.

Data were taken from MV Steller (21m fishing vessel) and MV Pelican (7.6m landing craft).

In addition, we collected multibeam sonar data of the seafloor and glacier ice front during both campaigns. We had a RESON multibeam sensor mounted on a pole, with a 15 degree wedge inserted to enable collection of near vertical ice faces. This accession does not include these bathymetry data. In this Accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number.
Purpose These data were collected to calculate submarine melt rates at LeConte Glacier from several different methods (ocean observations/flux-gate method, buoyant plume theory, and direct measurements from multibeam).
