The data in this package include coral colony size and condition data collected as part of the Guam Long-term Coral Reef Monitoring Program (GLTMP). The monitoring team assesses all coral colonies found within quadrats placed every five meters along 25 m transects (although note that transects of different lengths have been used). Quadrat size is 0.25 sq m for most sites; a larger quadrat size (0.75 sq m) is used for the Western Shoals and Fouha Bay sites. Collected data include measurements of coral colony length and width as well as an assessment of condition (percent old mortality, percent new mortality, disease/condition type and severity), with identification to species level when possible.

These data were collected using a split-panel sampling approach, whereby a mix of permanent and non-permanent sampling stations (one sampling station = one transect) are visited within each site. The location of coral colony survey quadrats at permanent sampling stations are marked using masonry nails, facilitating the near-identical positioning of quadrats during subsequent visits. However, the identical re-positioning of some quadrats could not be attained during subsequent visits due to the failure to re-locate the nails. The monitoring sites represent high priority reef areas selected by an advisory body comprised of reef managers, researchers, and technicians. The sites were not selected randomly from around the island and thus should not be considered representative of reef condition at the island-scale. While the general location of the sites were selected based on management priority, the site boundaries were delineated using bathymetry and benthic habitat data within ArcGIS; the locations of the sampling stations were generated randomly within each site’s boundaries using ArcGIS.

Purpose The coral quadrat data are collected as part of the Guam Long-term Coral Reef Monitoring Program, which documents a number of important parameters related to ecosystem health; these parameters are grouped into three categories: water quality, benthic habitat, and associated biological communities. Many of these parameters are indicators of stressors, and significant changes in these parameters will likely raise concern and possibly trigger management actions. Data collected for these indicators provide important information about the resilience of high priority reef areas around Guam. Monitoring these parameters allows resource managers to evaluate the effectiveness of specific management strategies, and inform the development of new management actions.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: CORAL - CENSUS (measured); Units: cm; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Not applicable; Sampling and Analyzing Method: All coral colonies occurring within a 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrat placed at 0 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m and 25 m along the right side of the transect are identified and measured and their condition assessed. Only those colonies whose geometric center is within the quadrat are counted. Percent old dead, percent recent dead, and disease type and severity are also recorded for each colony. The cause of tissue mortality is also noted if it can be determined with a reasonable degree of confidence. Measurements of the longest dimension and the width of the colony perpendicular to the longest dimension are made. An effort is made to carefully count all visible colonies, including recruits/juvenile corals. Care is taken to prevent the count of remnants of larger colonies as coral recruits/juvenile corals. Any tissue isolate suspected of being a remnant of a larger colony is noted as such, in order to prevent the calculation of erroneous coral colony density. At least two planar view photos are taken of each quadrat in order to maintain a photographic record of all quadrats. Photos are also taken of corals for which species identification is uncertain, of unidentified sources of mortality, or of species or conditions of particular interest.; Data Quality Method: Observations at each site were made by divers who have been trained, and met minimum standards in identifying species present at the survey locations and in assessing colony size and condition. Most data collected through 2019 was collected solely by one person (the Monitoring Program Coordinator), but data for some sites were collected wholly or in part by one other skilled observer. Improvement over time in observers' general level of skill with the survey method, and an evolving understanding of the coral taxa at the monitoring sites, should be taken into account when comparing data across time; however, minor improvements in skill are not expected to have a significant impact on data quality. Comparisons of data across sites or across years must take into account differences in environmental and biological aspects of each site. Comparisons for a give site across time should consider any changes to the site boundaries over time. Please refer to the Extents section of the NOAA NMFS InPort metadata record to see how the Tumon site boundaries shifted after 2010. The same methods of data collection were used at each of the stations surveyed, with the exception of surveys at the Western Shoals site, for which larger (1 m x 0.75 m) quadrats were used along 15 m transects. Species-level identifications and coral health assessments likely became more accurate over time, but minor improvements in skill are not expected to have a significant impact on data quality. All observations entered into the database through the online data entry system are compared against observations recorded on the raw data sheet. Once all database records are verified the quality control process is marked as complete for all observations associated with a given station/sampling period. This process is currently carried out by the Program Coordinator or the full-time field technician. It should also be noted that the data management system employs hard and soft validation to minimize data entry errors..
