National Coral Reef Monitoring Program: Socioeconomic surveys of human use, knowledge, and perceptions in Hawaii from 2020-03-26 to 2020-06-22 (NCEI Accession 0242743)

The data in this file were collected from a survey of adult residents in Hawaiʻi. The survey respondents were selected from a random stratified sample of households in the islands of Hawaiʻi, Kaua'i, Maui, and O'ahu. These data are the second round of data collection assessing Hawaiʻi residents’ socioeconomic characteristics, human use patterns, and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of coral reefs and coral reef management. These data are also used to compare changes in Hawaiʻi residents’ socioeconomic characteristics since the first round of monitoring that occurred in 2015 in Hawaiʻi. Data were collected through online and telephone surveys, and the total sample size for this survey was 2,700 respondents. Survey weights were created to adjust for the sample design and non-response, and then calibrated using 2018 US Census data so that the weighted dataset is representative of Hawaii's resident population.

Purpose The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long-term strategic approach to monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP coordinates various Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis.
