Sea level data collected from tide gauge stations in the South Pacific Ocean from 2009-06-13 to 2021-01-28 (NCEI Accession 0244182)

This data file provides a validated and correctly time-stamped version of the 2009-2021 sea-level records of the five following tide stations in French Polynesia: Vairao (Tahiti-Iti), Mangareva (Gambier Archipelago), Tubuai (Austral Archipelago), Makemo and Rangiroa (Tuamotu Archipelago). The time sampling is one or two minutes, depending on the tide gauge. These data can be found in other databases, including IOC database, but we found that 16.7 % of the timestamps in these databases are incorrect. In addition, outliers found in the raw data were flagged by comparison with a preliminary tide model.

Supplemental Information
The Geodesy Observatory of Tahiti is operating since 2007 five Tide Gauge stations in French Polynesia: Vairao (Tahiti-Iti), Mangareva (Gambier Archipelago), Tubuai (Austral Archipelago), Makemo and Rangiroa (Tuamotu Archipelago). Under the requirements of the contract number 03300 (signed May 17, 2018), for the monitoring of Climate Change and Sea Level variations in the South Pacific, signed between the Geodesy Observatory of Tahiti and the government of French Polynesia, the sea level data (until January 2021) from these tide gauges were screened and validated. These data can be found in other databases, including IOC database, but we found that the time-stamps recorded by the tide gauges are not transmitted by the GOES relay satellites, and are reconstructed upon arrival of the data at the end of the transmission chain. As a result, we observed that about 16.7 % of the records in the IOC database and derived databases are misdated, with time-stamps errors up to one hour. As we are operating these tide gauges, we were able to reconstruct the correct time-stamps from overlapping sections of the raw records stored offline in the tide gauges. When no overlapping sections (that is, no offline records) were available, as it is the case for the most recent data, we corrected the time-stamps by checking the phase of the main tidal waves M2 and S2 of the IOC data against the correct phase obtained from the tidal analysis of the previous records. This reconstruction was possible with a precision of 2 minutes.
Purpose This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.
