Satellite-Based Global Land Surface Datasets for Earth System Model Applications (NCEI Accession 0295750)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset includes key land surface properties based on various operational satellite measurements (e.g. MODIS, VIIRS and GEDI). They include the land surface type, vegetation clumping index, leaf area index, vegetative canopy height, and green vegetation fraction. Critical processing steps are taken to extend the surface properties for full global coverage, as well as gap-filling. All variables are gridded to universal global latitude/longitude gridded coordinates (-90° - 90° in latitude and 0° - 360° in longitude) with a consistent spatial resolution of 0.01° (~ 1 km). Currently, the dataset is available for a one year period (2020), and extension in time is expected.

Data Presentation Form Digital table - digital representation of facts or figures systematically displayed, especially in columns
Dataset Progress Status Complete - production of the data has been completed
Historical archive - data has been stored in an offline storage facility
Data Update Frequency As needed
Purpose The high resolution global land surface dataset provides more realistic, updated surface information to the earth modeling systems rather than using prescribed surface type dependent tables and parameterizations.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Leaf area index (measured); Units: m2/m2; Observation Category: satellite; Sampling Instrument: VIIRS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Original 8-day satellite product is downloaded from LP DAAC, converted to a monthly basis, and re-gridded to 0.01 (~ 1km) global coordinate. Missing gaps in the North Hemisphere from late fall to early spring are filled. More details can be found in the Technical Memorandum cited under Documentation
  • Parameter or Variable: Clumping index (measured); Units: n/a; Observation Category: satellite; Sampling Instrument: MODIS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Origainal monthly satellite product is downloaded from the GriddingMachine, and re-gridded to 0.01 (~ 1km) global coordinate.
