NCCOS Assessment: Orthoimagery, vegetation, and sediment characteristics in Susquehanna River, Chesapeake Bay on 20230516 (NCEI Accession 0303869)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset contains imagery, GPS coordinates, elevation data, types of vegetation, and sediment characteristics collected from Fishing Battery Island. This island was revisited to evaluate long-term performance post-restoration. The data collected for assessment is stored in one .tif file and three .csv files. The .tif file consists of an ortho mosaic image, captured using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone. The .csv files contain detailed gps data, observed vegetation, and sediment core information, including bulk density and percent carbon. The Trimble R12 GNSS System was utilized to capture the GPS data for types of vegetation, sediment cores, ground control points (used for georeferencing drone imagery), and the topography of the island. A total of three sediment cores were extracted by driving a 7 cm diameter polycarbonate tube into the ground. Sediment cores were further analyzed at the lab to determine sediment characteristics. To determine bulk density, the cores were sectioned into 5cm intervals and dried. The dried section was weighed and bulk density was calculated using weight divided by volume. The dried sediment was subsampled to measure percent carbon with a Perkin Elmer 2400 series II CHNS/O elemental analyzer. More information on this site can be found here: https://arcg.is/08Oirb0

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Ortho Image (measured); Units: pixels; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: DJI Phantom 4 Pro RTK; Sampling and Analyzing Method: A DJI Phantom 4 Pro RTK was flown at 60m altitude at a flight speed of 4 m/s covering an area of 18.5 acres. Ground sampling distance for the drone imagery was calculated to be 1.54 cm/pixel resolution. 159 images were taken with 75% overlap/sidelap and used to create an RGB orthomosaic of the field site. 16 ground control points were placed throughout the site and used to create a digital elevation model.; Data Quality Method: Ground control points.
  • Parameter or Variable: GPS Point Name (measured); Units: not applicable; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R12 GNSS System; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Names were recorded with the Trimble unit. The point names include three types of points: core_#, veg_#, fb_bike_#.; Data Quality Method: Repeat shots on nearby benchmark

  • Parameter or Variable: Point Code (measured); Units: not applicable; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R12 GNSS System; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The point code helps categorize what the gps references and will be used for. The point code options are: bike_topo, core, GCP, and veg. The bike_topo includes points collected while rolling the GPS reciever around with a bike to continuously collect points to measure the islands topography. The core locations were saved under the point code: "core." The code "GCP"= ground control points. These gcp points were used to validate elevation data collected with the drone. The veg points are associated with vegetative observations/ species identification at that location.; Data Quality Method: not applicable
  • Parameter or Variable: Core ID (measured); Units: not applicable; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: core tube; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The core identification included the site name (fb= fishing battery), relative elevation (high, mid, or low), and a descriptor (native, middle, panicum, or 3).; Data Quality Method: not applicable
  • Parameter or Variable: Top core interval (measured); Units: centimeter; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: ruler; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each core was sliced into 5 centimeter increments along the total length of the core. This number represents the depth of the top of the interval/section.; Data Quality Method: not applicable
  • Parameter or Variable: Bottom core interval (measured); Units: centimeter; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: ruler; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each core was sliced into 5 centimeter increments along the total length of the core. The ground powder was weighed out, wrapped in aluminum tins, and run through the elemental analyzer. The percent carbon of each core section was determined by the elemental analyzer. Duplicate samples were run for each interval and the average of the two was taken to determine % carbon.; Data Quality Method: Duplicate samples
  • Parameter or Variable: Vegetation: Common Name (measured); Units: not applicable; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: human; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Using a local guidebook, vegetation was identified and recorded.; Data Quality Method: not applicable
  • Parameter or Variable: Vegetation: Scientific Name (measured); Units: not applicable; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: human; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Using a local guidebook, vegetation was identified and recorded.; Data Quality Method: not applicable
