NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) Daily Global 5-km (0.05 degree) Satellite Coral Bleaching Heat Stress Monitoring Product Suite
The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) daily global 5-km (0.05 degree) satellite coral bleaching heat stress monitoring product suite (currently Version 3.1, released August 1, 2018) is a next-generation version of CRW's twice-weekly global 50-km (0.5 degree) satellite monitoring product suite. The 5-km suite currently includes sea surface temperature (SST, also known as "CoralTemp"), SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot (HS), Degree Heating Week (DHW), and Bleaching Alert Area (BAA) products, along with a 7-day maximum BAA and a 7-day SST Trend product. It also includes Year-to-date, Monthly, as well as Annual composite (maximum, minimum, and mean) products based on the daily products. This 5-km product suite provides service at or near reef-scales, allowing direct monitoring of the majority of coral reefs globally and significantly reducing data gaps (caused by cloud cover) that were present in the heritage 50-km products. The 5-km products now comprise the core of CRW's next-generation Decision Support System (DSS) for coral reef management. File formats provided are: netCDF and PNG.

Supplemental Information | The pre-operational data in rotation buffer will also include the year-to-date daily composite files, that will not be archived. Following are details about how these files can be generated: These year-to-date composite products provide information on the minimum, mean, and/or maximum values reached between the first day and the most recent update date of the current year for each data grid for corresponding variables. Once the current year moves into the following year, all the year-to-date composites produced for the year that has just passed will be discarded and replaced by the corresponding annual composites for the year that will be archived. And the year-to-date composites will re-start from the beginning the new year that has just become the current year. |
Purpose | The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program seeks to fully utilize space-based sea surface temperature (SST) observations combined with in-situ data to continually monitor for early indications of thermally-induced coral reef bleaching worldwide. A suite of monitoring and predicting products, including this satellite SST Anomaly product, has been developed by CRW as a decision support system to provide critical and timely coral reef environment information to the U.S. and international coral reef communities. |
