Quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) shell and tissue measurements collected in the Laurentian Great Lakes since 2015
Invasive dreissenid mussels (quagga mussels, Dreissena rostriformis bugensis and zebra mussels, D. polymorpha) were introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in the 1980’s and have since spread throughout the Great Lakes basin and across North America. This collection contains shell length, shell weight, and tissue weights from quagga mussels collected from multiple stations in the Great Lakes in conjunction with the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) cycle and the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) Long-Term Research program. Stations were selected to represent a range of depth zones and the major geographic regions of each lake.

| Purpose | This dataset can be used to calculate multiple allometric relationships using shell length, shell weight, and tissue weight values for each lake, or within specific depths or regions of interest. These data also provide a baseline to facilitate measuring changes in quagga mussel metrics over time. A better understanding of dreissenid mussel biology improves our ability to assess broad ecosystem impacts, as scaled up from processes at the individual mussel level. |
