Oceanographic and meteorological data collected by over 800 sensors on nodes at over 60 sites on the 5 arrays of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) network since 2013
The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) consists of seven arrays that are continually collecting data about ocean conditions. These marine arrays are outfitted with nearly 900 instruments - of 36 different types - measuring more than 200 different parameters. The instrumented arrays gather physical, chemical, geological, and biological data from the air-sea interface to the seafloor, providing a wealth of information for research and education.

Supplemental Information | The OOI data archival is supported by CRADA CR-000165 between NCEI and WHOI. |
Purpose | Data will be aggregated into NCEI oceanographic datasets, including the World Ocean Database, the World Ocean Atlas series, the International Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS), ocean time series of heat, salt, sea level, and other variables, and the Marine Environmental Buoy Database. Scientists use data in the archive to create custom information products for decision-makers across the commercial and public sectors. OOI Operators, Engineers, Scientists and technicians responsible for deploying and maintaining the marine instrumentation and infrastructure may use the data to ensure the arrays are operating as intended. Novice users contact the NCEI Customer Engagement team, data manager, and/or subject matter expert. They typically approach NCEI with a specific problem they need to solve or an answer they need. Finally, data workshops target training early career educators and researchers with the goal of integrating the data into their curriculum. The data will help introduce students to the ocean sciences as well as the skills necessary to acquire, process and analyze scientific data. |
