Absolute U- and V-component ocean current vectors from Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (SADCP), as both a high frequency sampling (nominally 5 minutes with 8 m depth bins) and an averaged subset (hourly time and 10 m depth means), are provided for the global oceans. The depth range was typically from 20 to 300 m during the 1980s to ~1990s, after which technology improvements have allowed penetration to over 1 km. Starting in the 2000s, many cruises began utilizing multiple sonars, some of which with multiple modes, to allow independent sets of varying depth-versus-resolution characteristics. Thus, some cruises have more than one sonar-cruise set. The high frequency samples along with ancillary parameters are provided in the Common Oceanographic Data Access System (CODAS) binary format, from which long- and short-form NetCDF files are made. The long form holds an exact dump of the CODAS set. The short form gives currents in Earth coordinates and select ancillary parameters. The standard (averaged hourly/10m depth bins) subset is stored in ASCII and NetCDF. This NCEI Accession represents the cruises taken over the time span of 2015-02-14 to 2018-11-24 and accumulated 2017-09 to 2020-05 at the Joint Archive for SADCP, a collaboration of NOAA and the University of Hawaii Currents Group. The data have been contributed by both US and international organizations.

    • UHDAS Software including CODAS
Our shipboard ADCP data acquisition system is called University of Hawaii Data Acquisition System, or UHDAS. It is much more than a program; it is a full Linux computer system configured to acquire, process, and serve data from any number of shipboard ADCP instruments together with the essential ancillary measurements of the ship's position and heading from any number of navigation devices. The automated processing executed by UHDAS several times per hour uses our ADCP data processing software, generally known as CODAS (originally meaning Common Oceanographic Data Access System, referring to its core database component). This software is also used in post-processing ADCP datasets: for hand-editing, filling gaps in sensor inputs, determining and applying calibration factors, etc.
