Plastic collected from SSV Corwith Cramer in North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre from 1986-10-15 to 2008-12-20 (NCEI Accession 0211007)

Data contains a time series of plastic content at the surface of the western North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea from 1986 to 2008. The highest concentration of plastic debris was observed in subtropical latitudes and associated with the observed large-scale convergence in surface currents predicted by Ekman dynamics.

  • Parameter or Variable: Plastic (measured); Units: pieces/km2; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Net tow; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each SEA cruise typically last 4-6 weeks in duration. A neuston net with a 1.0 m x 0.5 m mouth, a 335-µm mesh net, was used for sampling and is towed at the air-sea interface. The tows were conducted for 30 minutes at an estimated ship’s speed of two knots, giving a nominal tow length of one nautical mile (1.852 km). Plastic concentration was computed as total number of pieces collected divided by the tow area (tow length * 1-m net width), and reported in units of pieces km-2.; Data Quality Method: Visual inspection, comparison with published data.
