National Coral Reef Monitoring Program: Carbonate Budget data collected from Cheeca Rocks in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary from 2019-07-11 (NCEI Accession 0222861)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This archive package contains census-based carbonate budget data that was collected from a coral reef habitat located near Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Surveys (based on Perry et al. 2012) were conducted at Cheeca Rocks. Six transect surveys (10m each) were conducted to quantify benthic cover, macrobioerosion, and microbioerosion. Ten parrotfish surveys were also conducted to account for parrotfish erosion rates. This carbonate budget data along with other sea water chemistry data were collected at the long-term monitoring site during the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological (AOML), Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) led NCRMP missions.

  • Parameter or Variable: Rugosity (measured); Units: meter; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain laid out over benthos along ten meter transect line. Total chain length (m) is divided by linear length to calculate rugosity..
  • Parameter or Variable: Microbioerosion rate (measured); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain transects are used to quantify rugosity and available substrate (for microborers to colonize). These values and published erosion rates for endolithic microborers are calculated to estimate biological substrate erosion..
  • Parameter or Variable: Parrotfish Bioerosion (measured); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect Survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Calculated using mean parrotfish abundance of all 10 transects.
