Title: Stokes drift, wind stress, wind and directional wave spectra in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific. (NCEI Accession 0175004)
Abstract: Many years of simultaneous hourly buoy wind and directional wave spectra data in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific were used by Clarke and Van Gorder (2018) to estimate the Stokes drift and u* ew where u* = (magnitude of the local windstress/water density)^1/2 and ew is a unit vector in the direction of the local wind. Stokes drift and u* ew were found to be strongly vectorally correlated, the two vectors on average being within a few degrees of one another. This dataset contains the wind, wave spectra and Stokes drift data used in that study. There are three netCDF files for each of the 12 stations in the study. The first two files contain the observed wind and directional wave spectra data. The third file contains processed wave spectra data, wind data and estimated Stokes drift and wind stress. The data are dense enough to be useful for the time 20 year time period extending from 1996 through 2015. The wind observations were obtained from the National Data Buoy Center and the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Observed directional wave spectra were obtained from the National Data Buoy Center and the Coastal Data Information Program.
