                  YAQUINA BAY METADATA: SEAWATER DATABASE

Metadata: Descriptive information that will aid in decision making as well
as the ability to assess functionality of the data layer; data about data.

DATA SET IDENTIFICATION:

B) SEAWATER DATABASE

  1. Data Set Name: Hatfield Marine Science Center Seawater Database

  2. Data Set Description: Tide height (feet), Yaquina Bay water
temperature and salinity, and HMSC water temperature (in-building
seawater system) and salinity in ppt and degrees C.

  3. Purpose: Seawater characteristics for modeling or informative
     purposes.

  4. Information Available/Extent of Coverage: Available are year, month,
day (yymmdd), and time of day (hhmm).

  5. Sampling Methods and Accuracy:
       a. Instrumentation and location: Salinity: OMEGA non-contact
          Conductivity sensor, model CDCN-108 (no longer manufactured);
Temperature: OMEGA Temperature Probe PR-11-2-100-1/8-6-E. Two
locations for each instrument: Yaquina Bay intake dock and inside
NAL building (water from bay reservoir flows through piping
system into buildings where measurements are taken).

       b. Units of measure, temperature: Tide height in feet, temperature
          in Celsius, salinity in ppt.

       c. Accuracy/corrections: Tide height is approximate; measurements of
salinity have periods of slight inaccuracy.

       d. Time interval: PST, measurements logged every 6 minutes.

       e. Known errors: Salinity changes erratically; may be off by 6 ppt.

Since mid-1996, salinity data for Yaquina Bay is wrong.

There is erroneous data in building seawater temperature
and salinity data on 9/30/97 at about 9:00 to 10:00 A.M.

The seawater temperature in Yaquina Bay has been erratic
since 3-6-98. We are investigating this problem and will
		post an explanation when available.

In the May 1998 file, there are some false data with the
		tide and bay temperature.

       f. Missing data: Small blocks of data are unavailable during periods
of instrument malfunction. Known missing days:

               between 881031 and 881127
               between 900416 and 900601
               between 900813 and 900815
               between 901031 and 901130
               between 910207 and 910210
               between 910710 and 910712
               between 930503 and 930510

               between 960131 and 960208
               between 961122 and 961224
               between 970107 and 970110
	       six hours on 970908
