*Data file(s): PV05DATA.csv, PV05CAST.csv

*Format: phytoplankton sample file format (see file format_description.txt on the INTAS - 00-059 CD).

*Ship (station) name: R/V Professor Vodyanitsky (IBSS, Ukraine).

*Expedition: cruise number 5, January, 9 1979 - January, 17 1979.

*Parameters: SampleID - up to 10-character unique sample identifier;
   Genera+Species - taxonomic name of species;
   Cells/l - abundance or concentration (number per liter) in liter;
   Mg/m3 - biomass or concentration (wet weight per cubic meter) in mg/m-3;

*Instruments and methods: Phytoplankton samples were taken by sampling bottles from different depths of 0 - 100 m layer. Samples were concentrated by the method of back filtration. Nucleopore filters D = 1.5 mkm were used. Samples were fixed by Lugol's solution and after sample blooming - by 40% formaldehyde. After expedition samples were concentrated by siphon down to 2-10 ml volume. Calculations of phytoplankton cells numbers were made in 0.05 ml drop using light microscope and then recalculated for 1 liter. Additionally, sediments of samples were examined in Bogorov's chambers to reveal large and rare cells.

*Accuracy: The error of the depth determination is approximately 0.5 m.

*Processing (if applied): Biomasses of phytoplankton algae were calculated considering cells' volumes by equating real or average volumes of cells to corresponding geometric figures by Senichkina (1976, 1986) (see file references.txt on the INTAS - 00-059 CD).
