1.00,,"Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in the Development Area (ANIMIDA)","01-99-CT-30998","Offshore oil development and production activities are planned for the Northstar and Liberty sites in the nearshore Beaufort Sea by BP Exploration Alaska, Inc. At each site, the oil field will be developed from a gravel island. A sub-sea pipeline will carry oil shoreward for a land-based connection with existing pipelines. Extensive Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) were prepared for the Northstar area by the U.S. Army Engineering District, Alaska (USAEDA) and for the Liberty area by the U.S. Department of Interior, Mineral Management Service (USDOI, 2001). Even though historical data have been collected from this region over several decades, further environmental monitoring was deemed necessary due to the sensitivity of the region adjacent to Northstar and Liberty, and the highly variable and complex environmental conditions in this area. The Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in the Development Area (ANIMIDA) program was established in order to assess projected impacts from development and production activities and to provide information needed in post-leasing decisions to help further minimize these impacts. This study will monitor impacts associated with development activities and initial production of oil from Northstar and Liberty Units in the nearshore portion of the Outer Continental Shelf (OSC) in the Beaufort Sea."
