Carbonate system methods
Alkalinity:
Samples for alkalinity determination were collected in 600mL borosilicate bottles and were analysed within one day after sampling. Samples were analysed
following the double end point potentiometric technique by Pérez and Fraga (Mar. Chem., 1987) and Pérez et al. (CC.MM., 2000). Measurements of CRM were
performed in order to control the accuracy of the alkalinity measurements; the pH as measured by the electrode was corrected to obtain the closest mean
alkalinity to the CRM; the pH correction was never larger than 0.05. The precision of the alkalinity measurements was better than ±0.6 μmol kg−1 determined
from duplicate Niskin bottles, and the accuracy of the alkalinity measurements (i.e. including sampling errors) is determined to be 1 μmol kg−1 . Additionally,
the daily drift of the system was determined by regular measurements of a substandard (surface seawater); this drift was always very low. The precision of the
analysis was ± 0.6 µmol/kg and the accuracy was determined to be 1 µmol/kg . Taken from Report (2) and publication (3).

pH:
pH was measured in cylindrical optical glass 10-cm pathlength cells with a spectrophotometric procedure (Clayton and Byrne, DSR I, 1993). pH is reported in the
total scale at 25 ºC (pHST25). The precision was estimated to ±0.0012 by measuring replicates from the same Niskin bottle. Regarding the accuracy, the
theoretical pH25T value for the 117 CRM batch using the dissociation constants from Mehrbach et al. (LO, 1973) refitted by Dickson and Millero (DSR, 1987)
is 7.9424. Replicate pH measurements along the cruise on CRMs are lower than the theoretical value by 0.0099 pH units. An internal consistency analysis showed
that this correction should not be applied. Taken from Report (2) and publication (3).

Total Inorganic Carbon:
Samples were taken in either 250 or 500 ml borosilicate bottles, which are filled after the oxygen samples and immediately poisoned with saturated HgCl2
(100 or 200 μL, respectively). A small headspace is allowed in the DIC bottle for the water to expand. The stoppers were greased with Apiezon L and sealed with
a rubber band and collar. Samples were analyzed at GEOMAR (Kiel) using a SOMMA system. The accuracy was checked by running certified reference material
(CRM, batch 108 & 135). The precision of the analysis was checked from replicate analysis ± 0.9 μmol kg−1. Taken from Report (2).
