Hi Courtney,

Attached is the meta data tab. I did not realize that saving as CSV only kept one tab.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks,

Justin

Thanks Justin!

One thing is that I don't think you shared a metadata tab on this version. Do you want me to just copy that tab from the previous version over to the new spreadsheet you sent?

Hi Courtney,

Attached is the spreadsheet as a CSV. The file is final and can be DOI stamped.

Abstract:

Water sample data collected and curated by Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory and others between 2013 and 2024 in Lake Erie.
The samples were collected in part of several projects funded by various state (Ohio EPA and Ohio Sea Grant) and federal agencies (US EPA, NSF, NIH, NOAA).
The program column describes who or why the samples were collected. The captains program is a partnership between Stone Lab and the Lake Erie Charter
Boat Association in which the captains collect water samples and Stone Lab analyzes them
(https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/products/4c0k6/charter-boat-captains-help-monitor-lake-erie-water-quality). The SL Buoy program is a high temporal resolution
dataset of grab samples paired with a high temporal resolution sonde data attached to a buoy (https://doi.org/10.1007/s11356-018-2612-z). The HABs Grab were
high spatial resolution samples collected on two days during peak blooms of 2018 and 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.hal.2021.102080). The flow-through
program was an attempt to collect water quality data throughout the winter by pumping lake water into the research building at Stone Lab. Programs Stone Lab
and UToledo were samples collected by Stone Lab and UT Lake Erie Center from research vessels at routinely monitored locations. Samples were analyzed for
chlorophyll a (an indicator of algae biomass), microcystins (a group of toxins produced by cyanobacteria), total phosphorus and nitrogen (indicators of
maximum biomass potential), dissolved nitrate, phosphate, and silicate (nutrients available for algae), and total suspended solids (mass of all particulates
in the water).

Thanks,

Justin

Hey Justin,

I think if you remove the names of just the charter captains in column F that's ok. It has lat/lon/time information for each so I don't see an issue with that, you can rename that column to just "Site" as well.

For 2: you're right. There was one row for Stone Lab ID#2019SL007 that had no associated data but the rest does. Please remove that row in the updated spreadsheet.

For 3: Sounds good! Thanks!

Sending the new spreadsheet and an updated abstract via email is ok. I'll add it to your major revision update. Would you like us to mint a DOI for this dataset when we're finished updating it?

thanks,
Courtney

Hi Courtney,

I can do these. Follow ups below in your message in Red font.

For the HABs Grabs (100 or 172 samples collected on the day) and for the captains samples (we have several captains who collect samples for us), there will not be a site name. That is if because there are dates and GPS locations. For the site name column, should I change those to blank? The captains collect samples were they finish fishing for the day and it is the same position each week.

Thanks,

Justin

Hi Justin,

Thanks for submitting your data to NCEI, apologies for the delay in getting to it, we've had quite a backlog these days for archival packages and less staff to process them.

As I'm looking through your dataset I noticed some things that I wanted to bring up for this next update.

1. I noticed there's some Personal Identification Information (PII) in column F ("Site/Captain"). We don't accept any datasets with PII in it. You'll need to scrub that column of any names and give them either a captain number ID or something that can't be linked to a specific person. A first initial and last name is too much information to track someone. Or you can provide me another CSV with that column deleted if you choose. While the previous data content manager accepted this submission as is, I've been advised to scrub the PII if we can. Sorry for any inconvenience. Let me know if that's possible to change or delete. I can remove names.

2. There are also some rows that don't have any other information, did you mean to add those data? If so can you expound on that in the metadata tab or remove the sites that have no data at all? Empty cells are either data was not collected or it failed QAQC. All rows have data. A few parameters (exc MCs, TSS, NVSS, AFDW, light attenuation) were only measured on a few samples or in some years and not others.

3. Related there are sites that don't have time or location data but have other data associated with it. Can you please add time and location data or explain in your metadata tab why those are left blank but have data associated? I removed all rows without a date or location. If the time of sample collection was not noted, I added that to the metadata tab stating to assume sample was collected between 9 and 15:00

4. Are the HAB Grabs something that should be included in the abstract of this update? I'd need more information on that if so. I will do that. Is via email OK?
