Subject: missing data

I am Michael S McCartney, recently retired Senior Scientist at WHOI.

As part of cleaning my office out after 40 years as a sea going physical
oceanographer, I have started to cross check my electronic data sets from
my cruises against when is available for those cruises at NODC.

Basically I mostly used the WHOI CTD group until the end of WOCE, when it
disbanded. Typically, when nutrient measurement were done as part of the
sampling, they were done by Oregon State U. (Lou Gordon?s group) and
after post cruise clean up delivered to me.

Over the decades I have relied on the technical support groups to pass
the data to NODC. For a long period this involved just handing it to
George Heimerdinger, for many nears the NODC rep housed here at whoi.

I am glad I am cross checking for completeness, for of course the first
cruise I inspected, Atlantis II cruise 107 leg 11, Sept ? Oct 1980, I
see does not seem to have the complete water sample data. You have the
Sal and Oxygen data collected at each of the rosett esamples, but the
file does not have the nutrient data!.. My personal electronic files,
what I have used for decades, does have the nutrient data.

I have attached the ascii file for that cruise leg, so that you can see
what I have. The nutrients are the per liter form, not the per kilogram
adopted for WOCE. The Oxygen units are ml/l

Thwe headers are self evident ? except the first entry a minus followed
by a number, this is out station number (a consecutive number that began
with 1 for the first leg of this many-leg expedition. On this leg, the
first lowering is station 250, in the header that is ?- 250?. Stations
are separated by **

I will continue over the next few months with this cross checking for
completeness of your holdings of my cruise data. I thought that sending
you this first one would allow us to set up some procedure for my sending
you further identified missing things that I may turn up

I presume that it is one on my assistants way back when that dropped the
ball on getting the complete data set to NODC, or alternatively George
Heiminger as the local rep. failed to complete the exercise. But perhaps
you do have it in the accession group for those cruises?

The present WOD09 cruise number for the data file I got today that shows
only the O2 and S data is WOD09 US012976

The preceding leg in the expedition was also a WHOI/OSU cruise, WOD09
US009796. Its water sample file is complete, and agrees with my personal
record file for that leg.
