Lane snapper distributions in the Gulf of Mexico

Description:
Abstract:
This shapefile displays the spatial and temporal distribution of lane snapper (Lutjanus synagris) in the Gulf of Mexico. Data fields include categories for adult, spawning, nursery, commercial fishing and recreational fishing. Data was derived from maps produced for the "Gulf of Mexico Coastal and Ocean Zones Strategic Assessment: Data Atlas" published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Strategic Environmental Assessment Division, Rockville, MD 1985.
Purpose:
This coverage was developed as a part of the Gulf of Mexico Ecosystem Pilot Project. This pilot project was designed to improve identification and remote access to habitat data for fishery managers and researchers, and to provide habitat mapping capabilities within the Gulf of Mexico region. To reach this goal, a consortium built on shared expertise and resources from within National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS), and state participants has focused on several tasks, including developing an inventory and clearinghouse for existing habitat-related data and information, continuing developing a searchable FGDC compliant habitat metadata catalog, developing remote internet gateways to life history, habitat, and ecological data sets, and producing geographic information system (GIS) products for habitat mapping.
Supplemental_Information:
This species distribution shapefile is one of a set of 18 digitized for use by the National Marine Fisheries Service in defining essential fish habitat in the Gulf of Mexico.

From source documentation - All the relevant and dynamic aspects of a species' distribution cannot be captured on a map, even if complete information existed. For example, the activities of species are often influenced by highly variable meteorological and oceanographic conditions. Therefore, as with other maps in the atlas, information should be interpreted with a view to its inherent variability. Interpreting the uncertainty of the information is also difficult because of the need to provide a consistent and complete representation of information for all species. Considerable scientific judgment was required to infer and/or extrapolate spatial and temporal distributions from existing data and available literature. But even the most informed judgment is far from perfect, and the knowledge base varied considerably from species to species, among the life stages of individual species, and among areas of the Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, the certainty of the distributions shown on individual maps varies. Although it was impossible to assess exactly the level of uncertainty associated with each distribution line on each species map, the following general rules should assist the reader: 1. Distributions are relatively certain for the major commercial species, e.g., the shrimps, snappers, and groupers; 2. Distributions are also relatively certain for those species whose habitat preferences are best understood, e.g., the more common demersal (or bottom dwelling) fishes and crabs; 3. Distributions are more certain for the adult life stage of the species than for the reproductive and juvenile life stages; and 4. Distributions are more certain for the northern (or USA) portion of the Gulf than for the southern (or Mexican) portion. This is especially true for commercial fishing grounds.

Visual comparisons were made between the shapefile and the original hard copy map. Polygon attribute descriptors were cross-referenced with the source map legend to confirm consistency.

No logical inconsistencies are known to exist in this dataset.
Completeness_Report:
The source data for this coverage was produced by the National Ocean Service and the Southeast Fisheries Science Center for the "Gulf of Mexico Coastal and Ocean Zones Strategic Assessment: Data Atlas." Information in this shapefile may be less complete and less accurate than that contained in the source map. It is strongly recommended that the information in this shapefile be cross-referenced with the original source maps and that the process by which those maps were produced is well understood before using this information to draw any scientific or management conclusions.

Process_Description:
Data attribute table was modified to contain columns for species, description and time. The species column contains the common name of the organism. The description and time columns were added to the Adult, Spawning, Nursery, Commercial fishing, and Recreational fishing categories. Description columns contain the legend label for each zone within each category. Time columns contain a 2 digit binary code describing the temporal range for which the description applies. For this particular shapefile, the original shapefile was cropped to eliminate overlap with land areas. Spawning categories were added based on text information in the legend of the original map.
