#TITLE:
Water temperature, salinity, and sound speed data collected by CTD
and XBT from the R/V Falkor in the NW Hawaiian Islands 2014-03
to 2014-06 (NCEI Accession 0137765)

#ABSTRACT:
Physical parameters (water temperature, salinity, and sound speed)
were measured as high-resolution profiles at select locations and
times using CTD and XBT instruments on the R/V Falkor geophysical
mapping cruises FK140307 and FK140502 during 2014-03-07 to
2014-04-11 and 2014-05-02 to 2014-06-06, respectively. The CTD
was a Sea-Bird Electronics 911plus/917plus to a maximum depth of
1000m and the XBTs were Sippican, Inc. Deep Blue Expendable
Profiling Systems to a maximum depth of 760 m. The CTD data are
available in the Sea-Bird "cnv" text files and the XBT in
NetCDF (COARDS/WOCE).

Geophysical parameters were also taken on this cruise: multibeam,
gravity, and magnetics surveys. These data are archived separately
with NCEI (formerly NGDC).

Cetacean observations were also made by a trained observer.
These data were provided to NOAA Pacific Islands Regional Office.

#PURPOSE:
Primary theme of the cruises was geophysical (mapping).

Specific locations of each CTD and XBT profile are
given in the individual data files. There were only
2 CTD casts on FK140502.

#BEGIN AND END DATES:
2014-03-07 to 2014-06-06

#SAMPLING PERIODS:
Sampling date/time provided in CTD/XBT data files.
Profiles were performed at discreet location and times.

#PARAMETERS:
depth (m)
water temperature (degree C)
salinity (psu)
sound speed/velocity (m/s)

#METHODOLOGY:
CTD Profiles:
Sea-Bird CTD processed with SBE Seasave V 7.21f. Original hex files
in scientific units were converted to "cnv" text files. Calibration
on the instrument performed pre-cruise to derive coefficients.

This instrument is owned and operated by Schmidt Ocean Institute and
was used to acquire sound velocity profiles for the multibeam
sonar systems. A description is provided on the SOI website:
http://www.schmidtocean.org/story/show/47

CTD were collected at a few select stations. There were only two
casts on FK140502.

Expendable Bathythermographs (XBTs):
These instruments provide a cheap time efficient means of acquiring sound
velocity profiles for the multibeam sonar systems. A link to a downloadable
document providing a description of the Deep Blue XBT used is provided below:
http://www.sippican.com/stuff/contentmgr/files/0dad831400ede7b5f71cf7885fdeb110/sheet/xbtxsv.pdf

XBTs were made while the ship was mapping while CTD profiles required
the ship to stop for 60-90 minutes each day.
