FILE TYPE 132 - BENTHIC ORGANISMS - 8/10/82 VERSION

THIS FORMAT IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT STUDIES OF BENTHIC ORGANISMS BY
PROVIDING DATA ON DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND BIOMASS OF SPECIES.
ORGANISMS CAN BE REPORTED FOR POINT SAMPLING (GRAB OR CORE) OR BY TOW
(DREDGE, TRAWL, NET) OR CAN BE ENUMERATED FROM PHOTOGRAPHIC OR OTHER
SIMILAR METHODS. INFORMATION ON SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS AND OTHER
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ALSO CAN BE REPORTED. THE FORMAT CONSISTS OF
SEVEN (7) TYPES.

RECORD TYPE A DESCRIBES OVERALL CRUISE INFORMATION. RECORD TYPES B & C
ARE USED TO REPORT INFORMATION AT THE STATION LEVEL SUCH AS LOCATION,
TIME, AND COLLECTION METHOD; TYPE D IS USED TO REPORT ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS AT THE LOCATION AND TIME OF EACH STATION; TYPE E IS USED FOR
DESCRIBING THE BOTTOM CHARACTERISTICS AT EACH STATION; TYPE F IS USED TO
REPORT COUNTS AND WEIGHTS FOR EACH TAXON IDENTIFIED; TYPE T IS A TEXT
RECORD - IT CAN BE USED TO REPORT INFORMATION AT SURVEY, STATION,
SAMPLE, REPLICATE OR CORE SEGMENT LEVEL.

ALL RECORDS ARE 80 CHARACTERS LONG. SORTING BY STATION AND SEQUENCE
NUMBER WILL OBTAIN PROPER SEQUENCE OF RECORDS. THE FIRST NINE COLUMNS
FOR ALL RECORDS ARE TO BE USED FOR FILE TYPE (132 IN COL 1-3) AND FILE
IDENTIFIER, (COL 4-9) WHICH SHOULD BE ASSIGNED BY THE ORIGINATOR AND
SHOULD BE UNIQUE FOR EACH DATA SUBMISSION. ONE MAJOR CODE FILE IS
EMPLOYED IN THIS FORMAT - THE NODC TAXONOMIC CODE - A HEIRARCHICAL
12-DIGIT CODE. OTHER NODC CODE GROUPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR REPORTING
COLLECTION EQUIPMENT, SEA SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS AND ORGANISM QUALITY.
THE FIRST NINE COLUMNS FOR ALL RECORDS ARE TO BE USED FOR FILE TYPE
(COLUMNS 1-3) AND FILE IDENTIFIER (COLUMNS 4-9). THE FILE IDENTIFIER, TO
