  Description:
Abstract: A long term project to monitor water quality and sediment processes in Kaneohe Bay was initiated in November 1998 and continued through July 2001. Four primary sites in the bay were chosen which had been used in historical water quality studies. Additional sites were located in feeder streams within a mile of the bay and just offshore in the open ocean.
Purpose: To better understand the water quality and sediment processes in Kaneohe Bay

Process_Description: Kaneohe Bay, characterized as "one of the most intensively studied coral reef
systems in the world", is located on the windward NE coast of Oahu, Hawaii.
The Bay is about 13 km long by 4 km wide with an average depth of about 8 m.
The waters of the Bay are protected from the tradewind swell by a "barrier"
reef that marks the windward margin of the Bay. This protection allows extensive
coral reef development within the Bay. Patch reefs (more than 40) and fringing
reefs provide habitat and shelter to coral reef fishes, invertebrates, algae,
and seagrasses.

Three sites (North Bay (NB), Central Bay (CB), and South Bay (SB), all 12 to
15 m depth) in Kaneohe Bay were selected as close as possible to the sites
used during the EPA study of the Bay in the 1970s (Smith et al., 1981). The
only change was that the "Outfall" site was dropped as there is no longer
sewage discharge at that location. This site was replaced with the Kaneohe
Stream (KS) site, near the mouth of the stream in a depth of approximately
2 m. In May 1999, an additional site (MP for Mid-Plume) at 6 m depth was
added and replaced the KS site in October 1999. An oceanic site (OCN)
just outside the bay in ~30 m depth was also utilized.
