Source: Global thermosalinograph (TSG) data from the NCEI-TSG project
submitted by NCEI personnel. These TSG data are from multiple data assembly
centers, including the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies
(COAPS; TSG data from the Shipboard Automated Meteorological and
Oceanographic System (SAMOS)), Institut français de recherche pour
l'exploitation de la mer (IFREMER; English: French Research Institute for
Exploitation of the Sea; TSG data from The Global Ocean Surface Underway
Data (GOSUD)), Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory (AOML-TSG
data), and NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The
SAMOS TSG dataset is submitted by S. Smith and his colleagues. SAMOS data
have been archived at NCEI monthly since 2009-03 and are available at
https://data.nodc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/iso?id=gov.noaa.nodc:COAPS-SAMOS. Both
GOSUD and AOML-TSG dataset are currently mirrored at NCEI. The GOSUD data
are managed by Loic Petit de la Villeon, IFREMER. The AOML-TSG data are
managed by Gustavo Goni and Francis Bringas, NOAA's AOML. For each
individual netCDF file, the source information (original source files
located) is available in the global "source" attribute.

Actions: NCEI personnel copied the data from the TSG project folder
/nodc/projects/tsg/data/ to the 0-data/ directory. This NCEI-TSG dataset was
created by NCEI personnel using data archived or mirrored at NCEI. Data from
different sources were compared with each other and duplicate data points were
removed. When different versions of a dataset were available, the dataset with
the highest resolution was always chosen. All data were converted to a common
netCDF format following the NCEI netCDF Templates v2.0 - Trajectory type. All
data were processed using the same 11-step quality control procedures and
criteria and flagged using a two-level flag system to provide a
well-organized, uniformly quality-controlled TSG dataset.

Files:
about/
This directory contains files generated by NCEI with ancillary information
about the data submission.

0162936_lonlat.txt -t
Contains sample locations for these data. Each row contains the
geographical position where these data were collected (longitude in the
left column and latitude in the right column, both in degrees).

0162936_map.jpg -
Vessel location map for these data.

data/0-data/
This directory contains the data files created at NCEI. The files are organized as year/month.

File naming convention is as follows:

  SHIPCODE_YYYYMM_XXXXV1.nc

Where,
SHIPCODE - The ID code assigned to each platform. Callsign is used when is available.
If the callsign is not found, a code similar to callsign is given to that platform.
YYYY - The four digit year for the data collected.
MM - The two digit month for the data collected.
XXXX - The four digit wmo square number (10 degrees x 10 degrees)
  V1 - Version number
  nc - netCDF format
