Kualoa Beach Park: 2378849.2N 620125.6E
Marine water quality is ranked excellent at this site, and rated #1 in
this project. Water analysis revealed very low enterococci counts with a
geomean below the State of Hawaii standard of 7 ENT/100ml.

The coastal marine waters offshore from Kualoa Beach Park are Class A Zone.
There are no streams, canals, or storm drains exiting into these waters.
These waters contain no dangerous hazards, and are safe for a variety of
marine activities.

Kaneohe Beach Park: 2368332.3N 625874.8E
Marine water quality is ranked poor at
this site, and ranked the worst in this project. Water samples consistently
revealed low salinity and high enterococci values. The geomean was three
times as high as the Federal EPA standard. It must be considered a hot spot
and should be monitored during periods of heavy rain runoff. The collection
point was within 500 meters of the exit points of Kaneohe Stream, and Kawa
Stream, and a storm drain.

Kaneohe Beach Park is located in South Kaneohe Bay. These waters are
designated as a Class AA Zone and Water Quality Limited. Marine activities
include boating, fishing, and in earlier days, clamming. There is not too
much swimming here because the water is brackish and the bottom is
muddy and it does not appear very inviting.

Oneawa Beach: 2369138.2N 630129.4E
Marine water quality is ranked poor at this site and was rated #6 of 7
sites surveyed. Water samples consistently revealed enterococci values
in excess of both State of Hawaii and Federal EPA standards. The geomean
was more than twice the EPA standard. These waters should be routinely
monitored, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall.

Oneawa Beach offshore marine waters are designated as a Class A Zone. Oneawa
is connected to Kailua Beach at the eastern side. The shoreline is sandy,
and the water is mainly utilized for swimming, surfing and small craft boating.
It is however less than 500 meters from the exit of the brackish flood and
tidal waters of the Kawainui Wetlands, via the Kawainui Canal.

Kailua Beach Park: 2366794.9N 631890.4E
Marine water quality is ranked fair at this site and rated #3 of the 7 sites
surveyed by this report. The geometric mean of the enterococci count is 15
per 100 mL, slightly exceeding the State criteria (7 per 100 mL) but below
the EPA criteria (35 per 100L).

Kailua Beach Park is long, sandy, and beautiful. The offshore waters are a Class
A Zone, and contain no hazards to swimmers, surfers, or boaters. A brackish
water pool exists immediately behind the beach. This pool, which is enclosed
most of the time by a sand berm created by ocean currents, is filled by flood
and drain waters from the Kaelepulu Stream/Canal. This canal is an exit to the
sea of waters both from Kaelepulu Pond, Kawainui Wetlands, and several
contributing streams, as well as runoff from many storm drains. Marine offshore
water in this area becomes contaminated when this pond overflows following a
heavy rain, or when the beach is periodically bulldozed to allow pond drainage.
The quality of the marine water is generally excellent except during periods
of heavy rain when the pool overflows.

Lanikai Beach: 2359388.9N 635583.1E
Marine water quality is ranked excellent at this site and was rated #2
of 7 sites surveyed. The geomean is below the state of Hawaii standard.

Lanikai Beach is a long, sandy beach frequently referred to as the most
beautiful beach in the world. Its offshore marine waters are Class A Zone
and virtually free of any hazards. Lanikai Beach is a very popular water
recreational area for swimmers, canoe paddlers, surfers, and boaters. This beach
is as pristine as it gets. There are a number of storm drains which runoff
into these waters following sustained periods of heavy rain.

Waimanalo Beach Park: 2359388.9N 635583.1E
Marine water quality is ranked fair at this site, and rated # 5 of 7 sites
surveyed. The geomean of 19 ENT/100mL was below the EPA standard but did not
meet the State standard.

Waimanalo Beach Park is a wide sandy beach with excellent conditions for a
variety of marine recreational activities. There exists no dangerous water
hazards. The waters are designated as a Class A Zone. The waters of this beach
are sampled weekly for the presence of fecal contamination by the state
DOH Clean Water Branch.

A stream/storm drain fed pond is formed just behind the beach and about 500
meters to the east of the water sample point used in this project. The
water from this pond overflows into the ocean during heavy rains, accounting
for the occasional elevated enterococci values. This pond should be routinely
monitored, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall.

Kaupo Beach Park: 2357709.8N 638415.8E
Marine water quality is ranked fair at this site and was rated #4 of 7 sites
surveyed. This study recorded a geomean of 15 ENT/100mL, which is below the
EPA standard.

Kaupo Beach Park is a long narrow stretch of beach located at the eastern
extremity of Ko'olaupoko District. It is backed by Kalanianiole Highway.
It is well utilized by fishermen, swimmers, and surfers, and has no dangerous
currents, coral heads, or other water hazards. The marine waters are
designated as a Class AA Zone.

A steady stream of runoff flows into these waters at the east end of the
beach park. This water comes from the aquaculture farms of the Oceanic
Institute, and flood rains from the mountains. For this reason these
waters should be monitored routinely.
