This is an archive of data of 47 distinct XBT casts taken at 41
locations in the Mendeleev Ridge and Chukchi Borderland region of
the Arctic between 22nd August and 22nd September 2002, from the
from the USCGC Polar Star (cruise CBL2002, also called AWS-02-II)
as part of an NSF sponsored project.

Meta data
==========

1) Platform: XBT casts made from the USCGC Polar Star during the
        CBL2002 cruise.

2) Project title:
The Influence of the Mendeleev Ridge and Chukchi
Borderland on the Large-scale Circulation of the
             Arctic Ocean.
             (Short title:The Chukchi Borderland (CBL)
                           Arctic Crossroads)

3) Data collection dates: August 2002 to September 2002

4) PIs: Rebecca Woodgate (woodgate@apl.washington.edu)
        Knut Aagaard (aagaard@apl.washington.edu)
        Jim Swift (jswift@ucsd.edu)
        Bill Smethie (bsmeth@ldeo.columbia.edu)
        Kelly Falkner (kfalkner@coas.oregonstate.edu)

5) Data collection method:
manual XBT casts, using Sippican Deep Blue XBTs

6) Data calibration method:
Data calibration based on manufacturer's specs.

7) Instrumentation used:
    Sippican Deep Blue XBTs

8) Quality control procedures:
Only preliminary QC performed. Multiple casts were thrown at one
location when the earlier profile was bad, i.e.
       xxx08, xbt08
       xbt14, xbt15
       xbt18,xbt19,xbt20
       xbt21,xbt22
       xbt23,xbt24
In these cases, the final number in the list is the most
     complete cast.

9) Data format:
Ascii data files, one file per cast. Each file gives
- a first line with file name and position, commented with %
- header from the original file, commented with %
- depth (m), temperature (deg C) pairs

Two different XBT machines were used
   1) cblxbt01-32 and 43-46 used the older machine in the MetLab
   - in these files, the first position given is the most
accurate (the position in the XBT header is the time of
loading, not the time of firing)
   2) cblxbt33-42 used the newer machine in the aft wetlab
   - in these files, both positions should agree, the XBT header
position is the most accurate, as it is read from the
ship's GPS automatically at the time of firing.

For ease of use, the two formats are combined into a common,
ascii format. The full list of original file names
  and positions are :

The Soundings are from a hull mounted Knudsen echosounder. The
corrected depth is computed using a depth dependent speed of
sound from AOS94 data and corrected to full water depth by
adding the transducer depth of 9m.

10) Data collection problems:
    See notes above about position.
Depth information is based on manufacturer's assumed fall
rate, and should be checked against CTD casts.

11) Other related data sets:
CBL2002 CTD and Bottle data set - set of 126 CTD-O casts
with L-ADCP, with water sampling for salinity, oxygen,
          nutrients, CFCs, O18, Ba, He, I-129, Cs-137
(contact: Rebecca Woodgate or Jim Swift)

12) Conditions for use or citation:
    Data freely available
Please, as a courtesy, contact the PIs before using these data

13) Data qualifications or warnings:
Standard Sippican Deep Blue limitations apply.
  Estimated accuracy:-
           - for temperature = 0.1 deg C
           - for depth = the greater of ~ 5m or 2% of depth
