These directories contain expendable bathythermograph (XBT) and Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) measurements collected during
the SYNoptic Ocean Prediction (SYNOP) experiment. The measurements were taken between Fall 1987 and Fall 1990. The data are organized
by the cruise.

SYNOP cruises were conducted aboard the R/V Endeavor and R/V Oceanus to deploy and recover inverted echo sounders and current meter moorings.
XBTs for taken for primarily to calibrate the inverted echo sounders. Two XBTs were also taken on a cruise aboard the R/V Cape Henlopen in
October 1989.

XBT files contain two depth columns. One is the depth measured by the XBT probes (Zxbt). The other has been stretched with the following
formula to make the profiles agree with CTD measurements taken on OC210:

 Zstr = 1.045 * Zxbt + 0.0

CTDs were taken on the OC210 cruise to examine the depth differences with Sippican XBT profiles. The CTDs were partially raised and lowered
to coincide with XBT drops. The data records are separated into two files for each cast. Filenames with _d contain the downcast and subsequent
raisings and lowerings. Filenames with _u contain the final upcast. From printouts of the casts, the following variables have been identified
in the CTD files:

column 1 -- pressure (dbar)
column 2 -- temperature (deg C)
column 3 -- salinity (o/oo)
column 4 -- conductivity (S/m)
column 5 -- density
column 6 -- fluorescence (constant value 10240)

Position and timing information for these CTDs is found in the coincident XBT files:
CTD01: 016, 017
CTD02: 018, 019, 020, 021
CTD03: 024, 025, 026, 027
CTD04: 035, 036, 037, 038
CTD05: 075, 076, 077, 078
CTD06: 113, 114, 115, 117
CTD07: 150, 151, 152, 153, 154

A section of CTDs were also taken on the EN216 cruise across the Gulf Stream in the SYNOP Inlet Array near Cape Hatteras. These are separated
into down- and up-cast files. Each file contains its own meta data.
