  Gulf of Mexico transects

Three transects across the well-head of the sunken oil derrick are described
here. Three maps for each transect contour temperature (degC), salinity (on
PSS-78 scale) and potential density with respects to the surface (kg/m^3)
over depths from the surface to the ocean bottom along a given geographic
distance.

The first transect is a zonal section along a 1/4 degree box centered at
28.75N latitude, running from 95W to 85W longitude.

The second transect is a meridional section along a 1/4 degree box centered
at 88.25W longitude, running from 30N to 20N latitude.

The third begins at 30N,90W, running across the well-head to 22N,82W
diagonally, northwest to southeast in the Gulf of Mexico.

The transects were created using the World Ocean Atlas (WOA) 1/4 degree
temperature and salinity climatologies for Spring (April, May, June).
The WOA spring temperature and salinity climatologies are calculated
at 33 standard depths from the surface to 5500 m depth using all
available historical ocean profile data using an objective analysis
technique. The fields are described in journal article:

ftp://ftp.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/data.nodc/woa/PUBLICATIONS/ijc_manuscript.pdf

and in publications found at
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/OC5/WOA09/pubwoa09.html

potential density relative to the surface was calculated directly from
climatological temperature and salinity. This is not the recommended
method, but was used due to time limitations, and the field is a
good approximation.
