  Description:
    Abstract:
Leeward Community College students performed a series of interdisciplinary
environmental observations for the waters of nearby Middle Loch of Pearl
Harbor. This data set consists of measurements for estimating
primary productivity. Time-series investigations conducted at two hour
intervals, although reduced to four sessions between 0830 to 1630 hours
by inclement weather, yielded patterns resembling those observed previously
in fall of 1975 and 1980 and spring of 1977. Data from all years
      is provided within this set.
    Purpose:
Provide training for marine technicians and analysis
      experience for ocean science students.

      Process_Description:
Primary productivity studies involved deployment of 300 ml light and dark
BOD bottles at a depth of about 0.5 meters. Water samples in BOD bottles were fixed and
returned to the chemistry lab to determine starting conditions and plans called for
collecting exposed samples at noon and 1400 hours. Because of battery
difficulties which prevented reaching the samples at noon, all samples had to wait
until after 1600 hours to be fixed and returned to the chemistry lab for analysis.
Winkler titrations were performed on 9 bottles (3 initial bottles, 3 light and 3 dark
BOD bottles) with oxygen concentrations being reported in ppm. These values
were averaged and used to calculate the net and gross primary productivity in
units of mgC/m3hour, using a conversion factor of 356 to convert from DO in
        ppm to mgC I m3.
