Source: Original data were collected as part of the response to the MC252
Deepwater Horizon oil spill event. Data may have been provided
by the Subsurface Monitoring Unit (SMU), BP, EPA, DFO Canada
(Department of Fisheries and Oceans), or various labs that
         completed sample analysis.

Actions: The original data were copied into the data/0-data/ directory.

Subsequent processing was performed on the CTD data set at the
National Coastal Data Development Center using Sea-Bird SEASOFT
         software (http://www.seabird.com/software/softrev.htm) as documented
         below:
         - Steps to Process CTD data
         - Steps to Reprocess CTD data for upcasts and bottles
         - Steps to Reprocess CTD data including the wild-edit option

Processed data (bin-averaged ASCII files) were transformed into NetCDF
         format.

All transformed data were then copied into the data/1-data/ directory.

Files:
about/
This directory contains files generated by NODC with ancillary information
about the data submission.

DWH_BM_Cruise13.xml -
Metadata record for the archived data, in Federal Geographic Data Committee
(FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001-1998)
XML format with remote sensing extensions.

DWH_BM_Cruise13_processedCTD_NODC.xml -
Instrument level metadata record for the archived CTD data, in Federal
Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial
Metadata (FGDC-STD-001-1998) XML format with remote sensing extensions.

CTD_Process_CTD_Data.pdf -
This document describes the steps used by NCDDC personnel to process the
  data in the ctd/ directory.

BM_Cruise_13.md5 -
This file lists all the files in the CTD package submitted by the data
provider to NODC along with the MD5 hash value for each file, to enable
verification of the integrity of the files.

BM_Cruise_13_manifest.xml -
This file lists all the files in the Analytical Chemistry package submitted
by the data provider to NODC along with the MD5 hash value for each file, to
enable verification of the integrity of the files.

0069053_lonlat.txt -
Contains sample locations for these data. Each row contains the geographical
position where these data were collected (longitude in the left column and
latitude in the right column, both in decimal degrees). NODC may have
corrected geographic positions that seemed to be in error when generating
this file. However, NODC did not change the original data files under the
  directory data/0-data/.

0069053_map.jpg -
Sample location map for these data.

dirinfo.txt -
A text file, which contains the ship's call sign and cruise ID of data
collection, to facilitate NODC's online dissemination of this data set.

plugin-SMU+Data+Management+Guidance+v4_04.pdf -
These documents provide guidance to research vessel data managers to fulfill
Area Commands data management requirements and data specifications including
deliverables, data flow, information management and data specifications. By
ensuring consistency between vessels, cruises and samples of recorded
datasets, post sampling processing and analysis can be accelerated. The data
management guidance evolved over time and was not typically submitted with
the daily deliverables, therefore archived data management documents don't
necessarily reflect the exact guidance followed on that cruise.

data/0-data/
This directory contains the data files as submitted to NOAA by various ships in
accordance with SMU Guidance. Various levels of compliance with SMU guidance
were achieved, with increased compliance over time.-
Some data may be in Sea-Bird proprietary formats (e.g., hexadecimal files).
There is little or no precise documentation as to shipboard processing steps.

The column labeled Analyte in the analytical chemistry data file may contain
values similar to 0.1mm. These values are typically associated with sediment
sampling, however, samples taken at the water/seafloor interface may have been
tagged as a water matrix but included sediment results as well.
The column labeled Analyte in the analytical chemistry data file may contain
one or more instances of the variable Tentatively Identified Compound.
Tentatively Identified Compound (TIC) is assigned when compounds don't meet
the complete identification requirements. These are specific EPA requirements
that the labs use in their analysis and reporting. Using a GC/MS, when the
library is searched for the unknown compound, can frequently give a tentative
identification to the unknown; hence the name Tentatively Identified Compound.
In some cases the TIC is identified as a class of compounds (e.g., alkane).

data/1-data
This directory contains the data files processed at NODC/NCDDC in accordance
with documented standards. Sea-Bird hexadecimal files processed with SEASOFT
software and transformed to NetCDF are in this directory. Documentation or
processing specifications is provided in the about/ directory for reference.
