Description:

Abstract:

This dataset contains confirmed marine mammal stranding locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico (see time period of content for date range). A stranding is defined as a dead or debilitated animal that washes ashore or is found in the water. Stranding locations are collected and verified in the field by a network of responders. Stranded individuals are externally swabbed for oil residue and, when possible, tissue samples are collected to assess the potential role of oil exposure in the stranding. Information pertaining to oil-related impacts is forthcoming, pending laboratory analyses.

Purpose:

This data is being provided for reporting and response purposes related to the oil spill that followed the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
