Description:

Abstract:

This dataset contains newly reported confirmed and unconfirmed sea turtle observation locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico (see time period of content for date). Observations include sea turtle strandings (dead or debilitated animals that wash ashore or are found in the water) and sea turtles encountered during on-water turtle search and rescue operations. Stranding locations are collected and verified in the field by a network of responders and on-water turtle search and rescue operations are conducted by NOAA, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other partners. The time period of content metadata entry for this dataset refers to the date on which the stranding was reported (see obsDate attribute for date on which the animal was initially observed).

Purpose:

This data is being provided for reporting and response purposes related to the oil spill that followed the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
