CM at # = chlorophyll maximum at depth of Niskin bottle #

The two lists below contain comments made by the CTD operator and the data sample
cop at the time of the casts.  These notes were made on the CTD Operator's Log and
the Data Collection Form.

CTD Operator's Log

0	Mississippi Canyon. CTD choked. Short on input connector. Canceled station.
1T (0)	N5TEST01. All bottles at salinity minimum.  No tape record.
1	CTD dead at 138 m. Re-terminate. Canceled station.
2	CM at bottles 5 & 6.
4	CM at bottle 5. 4 surface bottles would not close. Bottle 4 no confirmation mark.
5	CM at bottle 9.
6	Bottles not cocked, will reshoot.
7	CM at 10.  Second cast of N5L04S12; no bottles on first.
8	CM at 9.
9	CM at 9.
10	CM at 9.
11	CM at 9.
12	CM at 7.

15	CM at 4.  Start tripping at bottle 3.

27	CM at 11; 2nd at 10.  Problems with bottle #2-removed.  Bottle 3 tripped first, 
	bottle 1 at surface.

4	CM at bottle 5 (76m). Bottles 9  12 didn't trip. Bottles 1-4 had cold water. 
	Salinity samples taken to trace water depths.
5	CM at bottle 9 (58m). Bottles 1 & 2 leaking from spigot; salinity samples taken.
6	No bottles closed; Niskin pins weren't pushed in.
7	CM at 8 (110m). No bottom bottle taken, so no bottom sampling.  Sound like air escaping 
	(hissing noise) from valve on Niskin 12?
8	CM at 9 (97m).  Bottles 1 & 2 leaking from spigot.
9	CM at 9 (79m).  Bottles 1 & 2 leaking from spigot; salinity sample drawn.  When spigot 
	is pushed in, water comes out although top valve is still fully closed.
10	CM at 9 (75m).  Bottles 1 & 2 still leaking; no time to fix between stations as yet; 
	salinities drawn.  Oxygen flask #39 accidentally broken.
11	CM at 9 (60m).  Bottles 1 &2 still leaking.  Water coming from spigots with top valves 
	screwed tight; no chance yet to fix.  Salinities taken.
12	CM at 7 (87m). Top valve on bottle 12 wasn't fully closed; spigot leaking.  Niskins 1 &2 
	still leaking; same problem; no chance to correct. Salinities taken for all three.
13	CM at 3 (81m)  Bottles 1 &2 still leaking; salinities taken.
14	CM at 2? (50m).  6 bottles planned and tripped, but for some unknown reason 7 closed; 
	question of depth?  Where did each one close?  Cytometry samples from all 7.
15	CM at 4 (36m).  Bottle 2 was taken off; first bottle tripped was #3.
16	CM at 1 (18m).  New bottle #2 on rosette.
17	CM at 3 (6.7m).  Bottle 4 was fired, but didn't close.
18	3 bottles planned and tripped, but 4 actually closed; question of which tripped where.  
	Bottle 3 at surface?
19	CM at 1 (bottom-18.8m).  Bottle 2 didn't show up on screen, so fired 3 as well at same 
	depth; same situation for 5 & 6.  Niskin 1 spigot leak.
20	CM at 1 (bottom-29m).
21	CM at 1 (bottom-37m).  Bottle 1 still leaking slightly at spigot.
22	CM at 1 (55.5m).  Need to re-label nutrient bottles please.
23	CM at 2 (80m).  All bottles were closed when rosette was brought to surface, so salinity 
	samples have been added to clarify depths for all Niskin bottles.
24	CM at 7 (82m). All bottles were tripped when rosette brought to surface; added salinity 
	samples to protocol.  Bottle 4 is suspect of causing the problem.
25	CM at 7 (85m).  All bottles closed when rosette brought to surface; salinity taken.
26	CM at 9 (96m).  All bottles tripped OK! (There was one for surface).  Peak of chlor. 
	fluorescence at 45 m (correlated to lower salinity). Approximately similar to chl max 
	at 96m, but narrow.
27	CM at 11 (72).  Bottle #2 taken off (couldn't be set for firing).  Only 11 bottles, #3 will 
	be first, #1 at surface.
28	CM at 11 (70m).  Slight leak on Niskin 1 spigot.
29	CM at 10 (73m).
30	CM at 10 (86m).
31	CM at 10 (66m).
32	CM at 9 (69m).
33	CM at 7 (74m).  No surface bottle11 planned and fired 199m-20m, but when rosette 
	came back up, all 12 were closed; added salinity samples.  Bottle 1 has a minor leak.
34	CM at 6 (86m).
35	CM at 3 (76m).  Double peak of fluorescence at 68 and 76m.  Bottle 1 with dripping leak.
36	CM at 4 (15m).  Surface bucket salinity (#192).
37	CM at 1 (23.5m).  Planned to fire only 5 bottles, but there was a double firing somewhere 
	in the water column.  Bottle 6 taken at surface (2.4m).  Little dripping from bottle 1.  
	Surface bucket salinity (#225).
38	CM at 1 (18m).  Surface bucket salinity (#291).
39	3 bottles planned & tripped; 4 actually closed-apparently bottle 4 closed at surface as well 
	(2 bottles were closed prior to closing the surface bottle).  Surface bucket salinity (#285).
40	No discernible chl max.  Surface bucket salinity (#42).
41	CM at 2 (18m).  chlorophyll fluorescence. Slightly higher at 18m than at bottom.  Surface 
	bucket salinity (#274).
42	CM at 1 (38m).  Only 6 bottles planned, but there were 7 tripped when rosette reached 
	surface; salinity samples added.  Bottle 8 was tripped at the surface (2.5m).  Bottle 2 was 
	changed previously to cast.  Surface bucket salinity (#224).
43	CM at 6 (51m).  All bottles were closed when rosette was brought to surface.  Bottle 4 
	leaking a little when spigot pushed in.  Bottle 2 little dripping.
44	CM at 7 (74m).  Niskin 4 leaking.
45	CM at 6 (74m).  Highest light transmission at 180-280m.  Bottle 6 didn't show up on 
	screen when fired, but 11 bottles were closed when rosette was brought to surface (bottle 
	7 was still on the chl max).  Flat seas.  Bottle 4 spigot leaking; bottle 2 dripping.
46	CM at 9 (70m).  While attempting to catch chl max, passed by 25.4 sigma-theta; went 
	back down to get it with next bottle (10).  Bottle 4 leaking from spigot with top valve 
	fully closed; salinity taken.  Bottle 2 slight leak from spigot, top valve fully closed, noise 
	of air hissing coming from closed value; salinity taken.
47	Bottle 4 leaking from spigot, top valve fully closed; salinity taken.  Bottle 2 leaking from 
	spigot, top valve fully closed; salinity taken.
48	CM at 9 (81m). Niskin 4 &2: spigot leaking with top valve closed when spigot pushed in.
49	CM at 9 (68m).  Bottle 4 leaking from spigot when pushed in with top valve closed; same 
	for bottle 2, plus hissing noise from valve.
50	Bottle 2 dripping from spigot when pressed down.  Bottle 1 dripping from spigot when 
	pressed down.
51	CM at 9 (72).  Bottle 4 dripping.  Noisy signal from transmissometer on way up.  Cleaned 
	connectors and re-arranged (re-tied) cables around it.  Nepheloid layer between 210-
	250m.  Secondary peak of fluorescence at 43 m.
52	CM at 8 (68m).  Nepheloid layer between 205-220m (missed by bottle!).  Wide chl 
	fluorescence max area (45-70m).
53	CM at 8 (81m).  All bottles closed before surface.
54	CM at 7 (64m).  Bottle 4 leaking from spigot.  Nepheloid layer 150-160 (not sampled).
55	CM at 6 (53 m).  Bottle 4 didn't show up on display as being tripped.  There was one 
	bottle left when surface was reached.  Bottle 2 dripping slightly.  Trichodesmium (algae) 
	observed in surface water, also at L07S07 (calm seas for ~3 days now).  Surface bucket 
	salinity (#1).
56	CM at 1 (29.7m).  Bottle 4 leaking from spigot still. Bottle 2 leaking from spigot still; air 
	escaping from top valve. Salinities taken.  Surface bucket salinity (#123).
57	CM at 1 (bottom-18.9m).  Niskin 4 no leak this time.  Niskin 2 also not leaking now.  
	Surface bucket salinity (#387).
58	CM at 1 (10m).  Surface bucket salinity (#374).
59	CM at 1 (19.5m).  Surface bucket salinity (#390).
60	Surface bucket salinity (#262).
61	CM at 1 (45.5m).  Niskin 4 didn't close, although it appeared on screen; pin looked to be 
	only partway pushed in, but those who set bottles prior to each cast say it is always 
	difficult to properly cock.  Surface bucket salinity (#311).
62	CM at 6 (63m).  All bottles closed when brought to surface.  Pointer is at 1.  
	Bottle 2 dripping slightly.
63	CM at 7 (62m).
64	CM at 8 (74m).
65	CM at 9 (70m).  All bottles closed when brought to surface.  Nepheloid layer between 
	170-200m (missed by bottle).
66	CM at 9 (75m).   Clearest water with 2.
67	CM at 9 (71m).  Niskin 4 slight leak from spigot-air escaping from closed valve.
68	CM at 9 (74).  Niskin 4 leaking slightly.
69	CM at 9 (64m).  Niskin 5 confirm delay before showed up.  Niskin 6 didn't show up as 
	having fired on screen.  All 12 bottles closed when brought to surface; 2 bottles fired at 
	5's depth? Or 6's?.  No surface bottle.  Top valve on Niskin 11 may not have been fully 
	shut prior to cast.  Niskin 4-still hissing at top valve; still leaking slightly from spigot.
70	Problem with CTD output at 431 m down; cast stopped; no bottles.
71	1st attempt at cast to 400m-stopped due to possible problems; 2nd attempt to 300m and 
	back (total depth at station 700+m).  Niskin 8 didn't close 1st try; 2 bottles closed a same 
	depth? Salinities taken on all bottles.  Niskin 4-same slight leak as before.
72	CM at 9 (66m).  Niskin 2 didn't show up on screen as having fired, but actually did; same 
	problems (leaking/hissing) on Niskin 4.
73	CM at 7 (58m).  Bottle 1 dripping slightly.  No trip indicator for bottle 1.  Midwater 
	nepheloid layer 170-200m.
74	CM at 8 (52m).  All bottles closed when surface reached.  Pointer is on #11.  Bottle 12 
	has cold water, so it seems it was triggered together with bottle #1 (bottle 12 had been 
	difficult to set).  Depths for bottles 2-11 should be right, but there is no surface sample.
75	CM at 9 (38m).  All bottles tripped when surface reached.  No trip indicator for bottle 1.  
	Secondary peak of fluorescence at 57m.  Smaller peaks at 10 and 20m.  Nepheloid layer 
	at 110-130m.
76	CM at 8 (33m).
77	Surface bucket salinity (#146).
78	Tripped bottles 6-9.  Surface bucket salinity (#384).
79	Surface bucket salinity (#253).
80	CM at 1 (bottom-15.1m).  Niskin 4 still has slight spigot leak when pushed in; top valve 
	still hissing sound when closed.  Surface bucket salinity (#277).
81	CM at 1 (26.3m).  Niskin 2 didn't fully close at top-salinity drawn.  Niskin 4-same slight 
	spigot leak.  Niskin 1 leaking slightly from spigot-similar to 4, but hasn't done so before; 
	salinities drawn.  Surface bucket salinity (#383).  Surface bucket salinity (#157) at light 
	meter cast prior to this station.
82	CM at 5 (35m).  Re-occupation of CTD #2 station; note new designation (N5LR405).  
	Niskin 4 leaking in same manner as before.  Niskins 1 & 2 not leaking but top valves 
	weren't fully closed prior to cast.
83	CM at 9 (70.2m).
84	CM at 10 (33m).  Surface bucket salinity (#259).
85	CM at 10 (24m).  Surface bucket salinity (#268).
86	CM at 9 (23 m).  Bottles 12 and 16 switched in nutrient tray.  DG:  noted and called 16 
	twelve for station 85 and 12 sixteen for station 86.
87	Surface bucket salinity (#256).
88	CM at 7 (35 m).  Bottles 7-11.  Surface bucket salinity (#263).
89	CM at 2 (13m).  Upper cap of bottle 2 didn't close all the way.  Surface bucket salinity 
	(#261).
90	CM at 1 (9.7m).  Bottle 2 didn't close well, so rosette went down again (from surface) 
	and bottle 5 was closed at approx. same depth.  Surface bucket salinity (#260).
91	CM at 1 (12.7m).  Surface bucket salinity (#258).  Niskin 4 still leaking slightly, 
	hissing.  Niskin 2-when top valve unscrewed, with spigot not pushed in, lot of water 
	came out of bottom, not out of spigot; bottom not closed tightly.
92	CM at 4 & 5 (5m).  Double trips at 2 &3 and 4 & 5, just in case.  Niskins 2 (okay now) 
	and 4 (okay now) replaced.  Surface bucket salinity (#372).
93	CM at 6 (2m).
94	CM at 12 (2.5m).
95	CM at 12 (2.5m).
96	CM at 9 (69m).  Actual highest chl (fl) values are at surface.
97	CM at 10 (60m).
98	CM at 11 (26m).  High fluorescence at surface, narrow peak 26-28m.  Nepheloid layer

99	CM at 12 (1.4m).  Surface bucket salinity (#26).

101	CM at 11 (1.7m).  Changed PAR sensor before cast (previous one wasn't working).  No 
	trip confirmation for bottle 11.  Bottle 12 was open when brought up, so Rosette was 
	lowered to 7 m and fired again for bottle 12.  Summary:  bottle 11 is surface; bottle 12 is 
	7 m.  Surface bucket salinity #48.
102	Maximum transmission = 86%.  Surface bucket salinity #128.
