This was a verified copy of an old magneto-optical jukebox platter.

NODC created a new version of this accession (indicated as 1-version/, 2-
version, etc. as necessary) to add a re-formatted version of the data
initially available in the data/0-data/ directory (i.e., "original
version" of these data).

An NODC metadata improvement project identified IGOSS data accessions
whose data in data/0-data/ failed to conform to the standard BATHY
format. Several problems were identified and repaired: the original data
had been concatenated, then broken up into 70 character strings. To make
an 80 character record, 10 characters were then added with a sequence
number. The 80 character records were then concatenated again. As a
result, the data file(s) in data/0-data no longer matched the BATHY data
format description.

Two programs were created to repair the data file contents (data values
were not changed). The restructured data files were copied to
data/1-data/ and use the existing data file number (minus the .) with
.fixed and .field extensions.

The data/1-data/*.fixed files are consistent with the BATHY format and
have any extraneous characters and interpolated blocks removed.

The data/1-data/*.fixed files are in the BATHY format. The data have had
the EOL marks removed, concatenated into a single string, split at the
JJXX marks, split into 80 character records, removed 10 characters from
end of records to leave 70 characters, reassembled into strings
beginning with JJXX, and parsed according to format description. The
data in these files are now consistent with the BATHY format.

The data/1-data/*.field files were created as an interpretation of the
.fixed files as a check that these data conform to the BATHY format. The
data were rearranged into a temperature profile format. The cruise and
station information are in a field-oriented format. Fields that have
missing data are left blank or are indicated by a "NOT AVAILABLE" next
to the field.

No data values were change by either of these processing steps.
