#COLLECTION_INFORMATION: Seasoar data collected in the top 200m of the
water column whilst following a drifting buoy in the IFA (Intensive Flux Array)
near 156E, 2S. Data collected from two cruises, one in late 1992 and the
other in early 1993. Whenever the drifter began to head out of the IFA, or
needed servicing it was removed from the water and redeployed. As a result
six sets of data were collected, as outlined below. Temperature, Conductivity,
Pressure and Light data were collected. The light data has not been processed.

#COLLECTION_METHODS: The seasoar, equipped with an
internal CTD unit was towed around a generally bow-tie shaped track with the bow
centred adjacent to a drifting buoy. The ship speed was about 8 kts and the
drifter was passed about every four hours. About twice per day, coinciding with
passing the drifter the Seasoar was retrieved and the CTD removed and placed on
to a Rosette frame. A CTD was then taken to 200m depth, with samples collected
on the upcast for calibration purposes. Whilst deployed the Seasaor followed a
sawtooth flight path sampling between the surface and 200m, doing one cycle in
about 7-8 minutes. At times when the Seasoar was inboard, CTD's were taken
regularly (near the drifter) to obtain some continuity in the data set. \

#PROCESSING_METHODS: Data from the CTD aboard the Seasoar was divided up
into 4 minute windows to constitue a single 'cast', analagous to the data
collected by a conventional CTD dip. This data was used to produce 2 dBar
averaged data centred on even pressures, data in the top 1 dBar was averaged
to produce a value for 0 dBar. Our CTD data is dealt with in a similar
manner. Salinity samples collected from CTD's post Seasoar recovery were
analyzed with a salinometer and used to calibrate the conductivity cell.
Special care went into ensuring the zero offset of the pressure sensor was
correctly accounted for. \

#ANALYSIS_METHODS: Inductive Salinometer used to determine the calibration
of the CTD conductivity cell. \

#INSTRUMENTS: Neil Brown Mark 3 CTD unit used aboard the Seasoar. \

12 line header
multiple cast files follow
cast files have a 3 line header, includes time (midpoint of 4 minute
window in both unix time (UTC) and dd-mmm-yy:hh:mm (Eastern Standard
Time=EST). The mid-point position of the cast is included, together
with its source, eg. GPS. The water depth is also given.
Data for the cast follows the header, this consists of 2 dBar
averages for temperature, salinity, sigma-t for all parts of the
water column (0-200dbar) that were sampled during the cast.
No oxygen data was collected. The identifier NaN is used where data
	isn't available. \

#MISC_DOCUMENTATION:
R.V. Franklin Seasoar data-some information about the files.
************************************************************

There are six files, three from cruise FR9/92 in Nov/Dec 1992
and three from cruise FR1/93 in Jan/Feb 1993. The files are
named driftn.dat, where n is 1,2,3 for FR9/92 and 4,5,6 for FR1/93.

The format is self explanatory. A header includes a note about the
navigation data. After the header follows a series of 'casts', each
cast represents the data collected over about a 4 minute period. The
date, time and position of the mid-point of the period are indicated at
the top of each tabulation. No water depth information is included.
Note that for drift1 no navigation data is available (GPS malfunction
during that leg of the cruise). The time is given in two formats,
firstly in unix time (number of seconds since 0000, 1/1/1970 UTC) and
secondly as day-month-year hour:minute referenced to Eeastern Standard
Time (EST). The tabluated data for each cast represents a 2 dBar average
centred on even pressures, except that the value for 0 dBar is the average
of all data between the surface and 1 dBar. Units for pressure,
temperature, salinity, sigma-T are dBar, C, psu, kg/m3 respectively.
No dissolved oxygen data was collected. Where no data is available the
Not a Number (NaN) identifier is used.
