Notes on submission of data from
Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP)

The files subitted here were downloaded from the SCCWRP Web Site
(URL = http://www,sccwrp,org) on November 4, 1998.

This submission includes data from three preliminary research projects
in the years 1977, 1985, and 1990, and from the Southern California Bight
Pilot Project of 1994. The following are the brief descriptions of these
projects given at the Web Site:

-- Begin Quoted Material -------------------------------------------------

1977 Reference Survey
Benthic grab samples were taken from 71 stations distributed at
approximately 10-kilometer intervals between Point Conception and the
Mexican Border. In certain areas near the major municipal wastewater
outfalls, stations were more closely spaced to delineate the expected
outfall effects. The data include metadata, infuanal abundance, infaunal
   biomass, and station data.

1985 Reference Survey
39 Stations. Thirteen cross-shelf transects were established at sites
sampled in the 1977 60-Meter Survey. Samples were taken at 30, 60
and 150 meters. The data include metadata, infuanal abundance, infaunal
   biomass, and station data.

1990 Reference Survey
20 stations. Seven of the 13 sites sampled in the 1985 Reference Site
Survey were re-sampled. At each area samples were taken at 30, 60, and
150 meters. The data include metadata, infuanal abundance, infaunal
   biomass, and station data.

1994 Pilot Project Survey
A 261 site survey conducted on the continental shelf of the the Southern
California Bight between Point Conception and the Mexican border.
The data include, metadata, sediment chemistry, infaunal biomass and
abundance, and trawl fish and invertebrate data collected for each time
   period.

-- End Quoted Material --------------------------------------------------

These descriptions were found to be not entirely accurate.

The 1977, 1985, and 1990 data files available from the Web Site were found
to consist only of infaunal abundance data.

The 1994 Southern California Bight Pilot Project data files, however, do
contain all of the following: Benthic infaunal abundance and biomass,
Sediment chemistry, Trawl fish data, Fish tissue analysis, Toxicity
studies, and station data (including CTD data for Depth and Rate of
Descent, Temperature, Conductivity, and Salinity, plus bottle data for
Oxygen Concentration, Oxygen Percent Saturation, Transmissivity, pH, and
Calculated Density). Some detailed comments from the SW Liaison (Norm
Hall) concerning the 1994 data set are appended below.

The files are submitted here as a nested set of Zip files (using PKzip)
which are in turn zipped into another master file (SCCWRP.ZIP) for
convenience in transmitting the data via FTP.

Two copies of this file (SCCWRP.TXT) will be included in the submission,
one inside, and one outside the ZIP file.

(Corrected for fact that this contains 3 versions of '94 bottle data:
     8.4 MB - 2.7 MB = 5.7 MB)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following notes by SWLO Norman Hall concern the 1994 CTD/Bottle data:

1) Since the data as received have time and position metadata in one file,
and profile data in another, SWLO Norm Hall wrote a short PERL program to
re-integrate these data and critical metadata, and to format the data into
easily readable columns, to allow the data to be visually scanned for
any gross anomalies. SCB_FMT.PL is the PERL program, and SCB_STA.DAT is
the output resulting from this program. Input files for the program are
CTDMAST.DOC, and ONEMETER.DAT, as provided by the data originators.

2) Documentation included with the data claims that a total of 264 stations
were considered for station sampling, but two were abandoned. The
reformatted data produced by SCB_FMT.PL revealed only 260 stations.
Otherwise, the data appear to be within normal ranges and complete.

3) All files, both the CTD/Station and other files, that contain Latitude
and Longitude often carry up to 12 digits to the right of the decimal point,
while 3 or perhaps 4 at most appear to be justified. Three decimal digits
were retained in SCB_STA.DAT.

4) The "BENTHDAT.ZIP" file as received, contained, besides the files
included here and shown in the list above, a self-extracting ZIP file
containing another exact copy of all files in the ZIP file, except for
the "BIOMASS.INB" file, which, in the included ZIP appeared to be an older
version formatted as a table, rather than comma delimited, as was the
later replacement file. Only the latter file has been included here.

5) In "BENTHDATA.ZIP" the file "OUTLIERS.DAT" appears to have an error in
line 7 (6'th data record), possibly caused by a stuck computer key. It is
recommended that the excess characters (dots, ".") be removed before
attempting to further process this file.

6) Note that most of the ".DOC" files are plain text documentation files.
The exceptions to this are the files "AREAWTS.DOC" and "INFOPLAN.DOC"
contained in the ZIP file "INFOPLAN.ZIP", which are Microsoft Word files.
These files contain tables which are not well represented when converted
to text files. For long-term storage, however, it would be well to convert
these files to some format not requiring a proprietary program for reading.
