Research Experience
At the Cochin University of Science and Technology 1981-1982
Involved in designing and execution of an observational program to study the dynamics of the coastal zone of the southwest coast of Kerala with special reference to the barrier becah system. The study involved the computations of wave refraction, littoral drift, sediment transport etc.
At National Institute of Oceanography 1982-1985
Continued the study of coastal dynamics with the analysis, interpretation and synthesis of the results obtained during 1981-82. Submitted the doctoral (Ph.D) thesis entitled "Studies on sediment transport in the surf zone along certain beaches of Kerala" in 1985.
1985-1993
Joined the project on Ocean Acoustic Tomography as project member and involved with the study of acoustic propogational charateristics of the northern Indian Ocean. From the climatological temperature and salinity data constructed a reference sound speed profiles for the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea for use in the simulation. Carried out a large number of simulation experiments using acoustic ray model to understand the acoustic behaviour in a wide range of oceanographic conditions. Participated in the Heard Island experiment in January 1991, to study the feasibility of acoustic thermometry to monitor global warming. Carried out the first short range, short duration acoustic tomographic experiment in the eastern Arabian Sea during May 1993. Successfully inverted the acoustic travel time delays into sound speed anomaly and temperature anomaly.
1993-1998
Involved with the planning and execution of Indian programme on Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies (JGOFS) in the Arabian Sea. Became the Principal Investigator of the Physical Oceanography programme of JGOFS-India. Participated in 5 cruises in the Arabian Sea under this programme, and carried out process studies to understand the physical forcing that control the carbon flux. New insight were gained regarding (1) the winter blooms in the Arabian Sea and the physical mechanism triggering this and (2) physical forcing that are resposible for fertilising the interior Arabian Sea during summer monsoon.
As a part of the study on seasonal and inter-annual variability, delineated the process of formation and spreading of the Arabian Sea High Salinity Water mass. The the large scale low-frequency response of the Indian Ocean is being addressed by studying the annual and semi-annual mode of variability of the Indian ocean based on temperature climatology and satellite altimetry data.
