MANDATE
- To undertake research on design and development of scientific and industrial
instruments; components and instrument systems.
- To undertake repair and maintenance of sophisticated instruments through
a network of Service and Maintenance Centres, located in various parts
of India.
- To offer technical assistance to industries and various other users
of instruments by way of fabrication, testing, calibration, analysis and
performance evaluation, etc.
- To provide advanced training in instrument technology aimed at human
resource development for the benefit of precision instrument industry and
R&D institutions.
- To survey and asses the present and future needs of various types of
scientific and industrial instruments in the country and to collate, co-ordinate
and disseminate information on the subject.
- To evolve national standards for instruments in collaboration with
other institutes.
- To assist in the formulation and co-ordination of policies and procedures
related to the development of instrument industry

SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Instrumentation for Microelectronics
R&D in the area of microelectronics including the development of
technology and equipments for device processing is major programme. High
level expertise has been Development of instrumentation for molecular beam
epitaxy (MBE), stepper optical lithography (SOL), reactive ion beam etching
(RIBE), reactive ion etching (RIE), RF/DC sputtering, electron beam controlled
evaporation (EBCE) and LSI/VLSI testing.
-Process Equipments Developed
Pioneering work undertaken at CSIO has resulted in the development
of various state-of-art instruments viz molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system,
stepper optical lithography(SOL) system, reactive ion beam etching(RIBE)
system, reactive ion etching (RIE) system, RF?DC sputtering system, electron
beam controlled evaporator (EBCE), LSI/VLSI tester, wafer prober and wafer
rinser/dryer.
-Technological Expertise Available
High and ultra high vacuum components and equipments upto 2x10¯¹¹
torr, electron and ion beam instrumentation, high voltage engineering,
plasma technology for thin film processing, thermal and electron beam evaporation,
epitaxial growth, dry etching technology for metals, semiconductors and
insulators and chemically assisted ion beam etching.
-Characterisation Tools Available
Auger electron spectrometer, PC based Hall measurement system with
liquid nitrogen cryostat, photoluminescence set-up, AC Hall measurement
system, electrical parametric measurement equipments, surface profiler
(DEKTAK), ellipsometer, etc.
Development of 4MeV medical linear accelerator for radiation therapy,
patient support system (patient couch), opthalmoscope/otoscope diagnostic
set, pulse oximeter, low-cost portable ultra sound scanner, RF hyperthermia
delivery system for localized cancers and drivers' reflexes testing system.
- Analytical Instrumentation
Development of scanning tunnelling microscope (capable of operation
in air & ultra high vacuum ) scanning scanning electron microscope,
UV-Vis spectrophotometer, microprocessor based atomic absorbtion spectrophotometer,
industrial gas analyser, atomic force microscope, disinfection unit for
treated sewage using UV radiations.
- Geo-scientific Instrumentation
Development of analog and digital seismographs, land based seismic
data telemetry system, digital indicator for inclinometer/tiltmeter.
- Agri-electronic instrumentation
Development of digital soil salinity tester, economic field usable
pH meter and specific ion analyser for soil and water, inductive
electromagnetic soil salinity testing system, integrated system alongwith
specific reagents for the direct measurement of Nitrite-N, Nitrate-N, Ammonium-N
and Inorganic Phosphate-P.
- Optical & Optoelectronic Instrumentation
Development of head-up display (HUD) for LCA, 35mm mini pan camera,
doorscope, fiber optics holography, optical integrated circuit (OIC) devices.
- Environmental Monitoring Instrumentation
Development of recording stack opacity monitor, digital turbidity meter,
automobile exhaust monitor, nephelometer,opto-electronic smoke density
monitor for automobiles, low voltage room electrostatic precipitator.
Development of sensors for robotics, flexible manufacturing systems
and process control.
- Instrumentation for Energy Management
Development of on-line energy analyser for energy monitoring and conservation.
- Instrumentation for Transportation
Development of transducers for studying road geometry.
- Inspection of medical X-ray equipments
Assitance has been provided to Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB)
in the registration and inspection of medical X-ray equipments in the country.
Undre an MoU signed between CSIR and AERB, CSIO was given the nodal responsibility
of coordinating this activity in which several other CSIR labs also participated.

- Indo-Swiss Training Centre (ISTC) of CSIO conducts the following training
courses:

- Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics & Industrial Automation
- Advanced Diploma in Die & Mould Making
- M.Tech Course in Instrumentation conducted by Punjab University, Chandigarh
in collaboration with CSIO.
- Specialised training programmes such as management development programme
on operation, maintenance & repair of biomedical equipment for third
world countries and entrepreneurship development programmes
- BITS practice school training programme.
- Repair & maintenance service of instruments
- Repair & maintenance service of instruments is provided by Service
& Maintenance (S&M) Centres of CSIO located at Chennai, Jaipur
and New Delhi besides S&M Division at Chandigarh.
