The
Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology(IHBT), Palampur, Himachal
Pradesh is located in the famous Kangra Valley known for its scenic
beauty and mysticism, in the salubrious environs of Palampur(1300 msl)
perched in the lap of the majestic snow clad Dhauladhar ranges of Western
Himalayas(India).
MISSION
To provide an industrial R&D base for establishment,
upgradation and sustainable management of bioresources in the Himalayan
region through agrotechnology, processing technology and biotechnology.
MAJOR R&D PROGRAMMES
- Conservation
and sustainable management of Himalayan Bioresources.
- Management of
tea plantations and tea manufacture.
- Agrotechnologies
for floriculture crops, medicinal and aromatic plants.
- Processing technologies
for aromatics and herbals.
- Characterisation
and improvement of selected industrial crops using conventional techniquesa
as well as biotechnology.

SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Doubling the
tea production in Himachal Pradesh from 0.6 million kg made tea in 1986
to 1.4 million kg in 1996.
- Optimisation
of processing to obtain high quality black/green tea.
- Testing and
development of improved strains/clones of tea, Damask rose(Rosa damascena),
wild Marigold(Targetes minuta).
- Two strains
of Damask rose 'Jwala'and 'Himroz'released in 1997. 'Jwala'
for tropical and sub-tropical zones and 'Himroz'for temperate and
hill zones.
- Micropropagation
of tea, bamboo, orchids, gladiolus, ferns and other medicinal/aromatic
plants.
- Technology for
commercial cultivation of ornamental flowers.
- Training in
cultivation of tea, floriculture crops, medicinal/aromatic plants.
