MANDATE
- To develop processes and products
for petroleum refining and petrochemical industries.
- To assist refinearies in absorption,
adoption and selection of technologies and optimization of unit operations.
- To provide technical services, including
crude evaluation to the petroleum industry.
- To carry out R&D work on utilization
of crude, its products, natural gas and petrochemicals.
- To train personnel working in oil
and petrochemical industry.
- To assist the Bureau of Indian Standards
in formulation of standards for petroleum products.
- To conduct feasibility studies and
market demand surveys of petroleum and related products.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Pilot
Plants: Dewaxing/deoiling visbreaking, delayed coking, propane
deasphalting, 2"dia Old Rushton Column, rotating disc columns, high
pressure equillibrium still, catalytic reforming, Hydro-treating, bench
scale units for hydroprocessing, MAT unit for FCC catalysts, hydrocracking,
glass lined 30 litre capacity reactor, autoclaves of various capacities,
bench scale fermentor, micro reactor.
- Analytical
Facilities:Facilities for hydrocarbon analysis, catalyst characterization,
petroleum products evaluation, crude evaluation, combustion chambers, incinerators,
exhaust gas analyzer and anemometers for industrial and domestic appliance
studies.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
The following process and products have been developed :
- Solvent extraction
process for the production of benzene and toulene, food grade hexane, aviation
turbine fuel, lubricating oil base stocks, dewaxing/deoiling and deasphalting,
denomatisation of kerosene.
- Liquid phase
adsorption process for production of petrochemical-grade -hexane from food-grade-hexane.
- Catalysts and
process for catalytic reforming, hydrogenation of pyrolysis gasoline and
hydro-desulphurization of naptha, kerosene and gas oil.
- Thermal conversion
processes for soaker visbreaking and delayed coking.
- A computer simulated
model package for motor gasoline in respect of octane number, RVP and distillation
characteristics has been developed.
- An improved
and energy efficient process for production of pitches used for making
graphite electrodes.
- Use of alcohols
and CNG as alternative fuel in IC engines.
- A process for
the production of hot rolling oil for steel mills.
- A kit for vehicles
using methanol and disel bifuel.
- Catalytic converters
to reduce auto emissions.
- Processes for
the production of speciality chemicals & additives like sulpholane,
phenolic and amine antioxidants, E.P. and multifuntional additives etc.
- Fuel efficient
industrial burner, LPG stove, kerosene wicks, and gas stoves and improved
hurricane lanterns and lamps.
