SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENTATION CENTRE (INSDOC)
MANDATE
- To develop collections
of sources of information in different fields of science and technology.
- To render information
services to S&T community in the field of science and technology.
- To develop appropriate
linkages with information systems and services organised in India and abroad
and to provide access to databases.
- To act as a
national repository of entire S&T informstion generated in the country.
- To carry out
R&D in information science and technology.
- To develop trained
manpower for undertaking advanced level tasks in the level field of information
science and services.
- To adopt and
promote appropriate technologies and management practices for increasing
productivity of information of networks and services in the country.

SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- INSDOC is functioning
as a repository of the S&T information generated in the country. All
the Indian S&T peroidicals and the important Indian S&T books
are being procured by the Centre.
- INSDOC publishes
Indian Science Abstrats (ISA) ( fortnightly) which contains abstracts
& research papers in about 1000-1200 Indian S&T publications in
addition to information on patents standards and thesis. It also covers
papers published by Indian Scientists in foreign journals.
- A computerized
communication network (SIRNET) has been established among R & D organisations
for fast E-mail and data transfer. The number of R&D organisations
joining the SIRNET is increasing at a rapid rate.
- An online search
facility from international and indegenous databases has been established.
Some of the databases available for search are : National Union cataloge
of Scintific Serials in India (NUCSSI), Indian Serials Contents on
Multimedia (IS-COMM), Polymer Science Literature, Metallurgy Database,
Database on Indian Patents (INPAT), Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
Database (MAPA), Indian Experts Database, Material Science Bibliographic
Databases and National Science Library Catalogue Database.
- A new service,
' Contents and Photocopies Service ' (CAPS), based on a set of 5000 S&T
peroidicals, has been started to fill the gap created by a sharp reduction
in the availability of foreign peroidicals to Indian S&T community.
- Electronic imaging
has been setup as a modern archival alternative to microfilming, etc.
- Expertise has
been developed to undretake on a turnkey basis, establishment of information
networks and library networks, and modernization of library and information
centres of other organizations. Design and development of information databases
are also undertaken for other organisations.
