INDUSTRIAL TOXICOLOGY
RESEARCH CENTRE
(ITRC)
MANDATE
- To undertake
epidemiological surveys of industrial and agricultural workers.
- To generate
toxicological data for various industrial and chemicals and safety assessment
of various chemicals and products.
- To develop suitable
diagnostic tests for early diagnosis of toxicity and to suggest remedial
and preventative measures.
- To develop sensitive
methods for estimation of toxic chemicals.
- To provide expert
consultancy, guidance to government agencies/industries on potential risk
and toxicological matters.
- To interact
with international organizations such as WHO, FAO, UNEP, UNDP, IRPTC, IPCS,
as national correspondent on toxicological matters.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Facilities for
safety evaluation of chemicals and materials using standard US FDA &
EPA, OECD guidelines following Good Laboratory Practices.
- Animal House
(animal breeding and maintenance facilities).
- Toxicology Information
Centre: computerized database, technical query-answer services.
- State of art
instrumentation facilities for analysis of pollutants and toxicants.
- Wastewater analysis
laboratory.
- Environmental
monitoring, Enviromental Impact Analysis.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Mechanisms by
which pesticides, heavy metals, monomers, plasticizers, and other plastic
additives, solvents, food color and dye intermediates, industrial dust
and other chemical cause deleterious effects have been elucidated.
- Methods of early
diagnosis of manganese poisoning, a peripheral model for monitoring the
neurological disorders caused by neurotoxic diseases has been developed.
- Specific animal
models have been developed for studying the mechanisms of carcinogenesis,
prevention of toxicity of chemicals using immunomodulators and nutrient
supplements and drugs have been developed.
- Demonstrated
ability of some chelating agents in abrogating the toxicity due to metals
in animal models. Vitamin B complex supplementation has been found to diminish
susceptibility to lead and cadmium intoxication.
- Protocols for
ecotoxicological evaluation of effluents using biological species, safety
evaluation of plastics and polymers and screening of the reproductive,
immunotoxic, neurotoxic, genotoxic, phytotoxic, photo toxic and carcinogenic
and mutagenic effects of chemicals have been developed.
- Toxicity data
on the widely used chemicals of interest to country have been generated.
- Monographs ,
handbooks, criteria documents, guidelines and manuals on toxicity of chemicals
has been published.
- The Centre has
contributed significantly to Drinking Water Mission, Ganga Action Plan,
Global Climatic Change Programme and All India Co-ordinated Programmes
on Pesticides and Metal Exposure Assessment.
- Programme on pesticides and Metal Exposure Assessment. National Standards
for consumer safety protection and test protocols for detergents have been
developed
