MANDATE
- To carry out
R & D in the domain of environmental monitoring; environmental biotechnology;
toxic wastes management; environmental systems design, modelling and optimization;
environmental impact & risk assessment and environmental audit; and
environmental policy analysis.
- To participate
in National Mission programmes, e.g. inspection of environment management
systems, and in CSIR inter-laboratory thrust area projects, e.g. development
of Indian Reference Materials.

- Sophisticated
instruments for the analysis of pollutants.
- Three advanced
computer networks with necessary software for activities related to Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), Digital Image Processing (DIP), and Knowledge
Based System (KBS).

the states of U.P, Bihar and West Bengal, at the instance of Supreme Court.

of Indian Reference Materials under the CSIR Inter-Laboratory Programme.
- Study of air
quality trends in 10 major Indian cities.
- Audit of global
environment (air) monitoring stations in the South East Asian Countries.
- Development
of nucleic acid probes for detection of enteric viruses and Entamoeba
histolytica in drinking water.
- Use of a neutron
activation analysis technique for estimation of trace elements in environmental
samples.
- Extensive use
of remote sensing tools in the monitoring and analysis of land use pattern.
- Application
of natural and recombinant micro-organisms to biosurfactant production.
- Oil spills degradation
and pollution control.
- Recombinant
DNA application to anaerobic fixed film systems for methane biosynthesis.
- Production of
2-3 butanedoil from water hyacinth and parthenium grass.
- Microbial desulphurization
of fossil fuels.
